Much enjoying rereading Faulkner’s audacious “Absalom, Absalom!” (1936)—a great Modernist prose poem/tall tale of mythic Thomas Sutpen as an outsized & improbable macho-heroic figure who might’ve been played by Kirk Douglas. Much of this novel demands a suspension of disbelief not so readily forthcoming in 2026 as in the 1950s when exploits of patriarchal villain-hero figures were easier to swallow. Now we are likely to regard with some skepticism the mythologizing, especially the passive role of women wholly defined by the patriarchy as if possessing no identities, no lives except in the male orbit. Still, a pleasure to read extravagant Faulknerian prose.
