Not only did Disney pay $0 in federal income taxes last year due to Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” it got a $1.4 billion tax refund after making $12.4 billion in profits. “Corporation will create jobs if they get tax breaks” is a Big Lie. It never trickles down. Ever.

One of Austin's voting locations with very high Democratic voter turnout. Voting there now has been intentionally disrupted twice this morning.
The fire alarm has been pulled again and yet hundreds of students are still waiting outside the polling place to make their voices heard 🤘

Very hopeful for LA and our future - just dropped my ballot off watching a sunset over Stoner Park, 70 degrees on a post rain day, watching ppl skating, eating tacos, playing w/ kids- this city can be the best in the world if we keep building housing, parks, and manage it right!

So glad Ta-Nehisi said this: it is one of my bugbears that everyone gets that McCain moment wrong; even card-carrying anti-racist liberals praise McCain for that remark that was unambiguously and obviously racist. I remember Ben Affleck rightly calling it out on Bill Maher’s show years ago.

A joyful night chatting with Mel Brooks about his most underrated film: “The Twelve Chairs.” Such a beautiful and heartfelt movie - Mel thinks it might be his best work as a director. And the Q&A was a blast - Mel is still the funniest man on Earth… working the crowd at age 100! Scott even got to do his Dom DeLuise imitation!

In 1964, houses across the Hollywood Bowl on Highland were demo'd thru eminent domain to accommodate the Hollywood Motion Picture Museum, designed by William Pereira. County mismanagement scuttled it. The site became a parking lot, which now holds the historic Lasky-DeMille Barn.

My American friends say “but we -have- fish and chips too” until I take them to Burdocks. The first bite is always the tell. What is this Druid wizardry they ask me. I’d sell my soul today for a feed of good chips.

You mean, “work till you die while not being able to afford food, housing and healthcare, while your CEO writes-off their private jets and yachts on their taxes,” isn’t working?

Private equity is a remarkable innovation. You buy a functioning company, load it with debt, sell its assets, fire half the staff, collect millions in fees, and when it collapses, explain how creative destruction makes capitalism so fucking efficient.

People need to stop looking at lines like this and thinking wow this is so awesome so many people are voting and start seeing these insanely long lines as what they are- a form of voter suppression.
Early voting lines at the Montgomery County Board of Elections are an estimated 3 hour wait time as of 3 pm today.

Know a guy from California, higher middle class lifestyle in Amsterdam, says for him to move back to LA to same quality of life he’d need 7 figures in pay just to afford a house in a neighborhood with a school comparable to the normal Dutch school his kid goes to.

This is spot on, and why I say a French exec making $130k euros a year has a better quality of life than two overworked undersexed tech couple in Marin making a combined $750k
An interesting theme lately in the American expat community in Western Europe, especially higher earning corporate types (e.g. €200-300K/year), is the feeling of being unable to move back home to the US. Few reasons... Many who moved in the years after COVID sold their homes when rates were closer to zero than the rates now. Now that same home is ~20% more expensive while mortgage rates are 2x higher. So the monthly cost of housing like-for-like went up literally 100% in just 3-5 years. They've gotten used to the European way of life (e.g. no or maybe just one car, easy train and airport access) and its far less intense commercial and career culture... so fewer working hours and more vacations and significant employee protections (i.e. hard to be fired legally). This is great while living in Europe... a €250K household income is massive even post-tax considering the low relative cost of health care, education, transport, housing, etc... ...but dropping themselves back into US society... especially in a major metro area like NY, SF, Chicago, even Miami now... at age 40-50 with kids... is largely impractical. Many Europeans would be shocked to learn that ~$250K/year in the US is incomparable to that same level of earnings in a major Western European city like London or Amsterdam or Paris. I'd estimate the income needed in the US to match the overall quality of life you'd enjoy in one of those European cities... is around $500-750K/year. Wild.

Cambodia: Rice farmers in Battambang went from drought to floods, watching their crops wither before being submerged in September and October. More than 296,000 acres of rice fields flooded, with over 173,000 acres now beyond harvesting, according to the province's deputy agriculture director.
