Millions of Americans, including about 1.6 million children, are still being prescribed a very common asthma and allergy medication. The drug is called montelukast, sold under the brand name Singulair. It carries the Food and Drug Administration's strongest warning, called a black box warning, for serious mental health side effects. The warning was added in 2020, after the agency linked the drug to depression, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts. A review covering 1998 to 2018 identified 82 suicides tied to the medication, including 19 in children. Despite the warning, the drug remains one of the most widely prescribed treatments for asthma and allergies in the country, and many patients say they were never told about the risk.
