Connie Culp’s husband pointed a shotgun at her face, pulled the trigger, then turned the gun on himself. The blast took her nose, her cheeks, the roof of her mouth and one eye. She couldn’t smell, couldn’t smile, and couldn’t keep food in her mouth. A little girl in a grocery store pointed at her and screamed, “There’s a monster, Mommy.” He survived, served seven years, and she says she forgave him the day he did it. 2004, Ohio. She and her husband, Tommy, ran a paint company together. On weekends they went boating and camping. “I knew something bad was going to happen,” she says. “I just never dreamed it was this.” In the video below she tells it herself. One shot, at close range. Then he shot himself. Both of them lived. She went through almost 30 operations. None of them gave her a face back. Her face began to slide. She couldn’t eat. “I couldn’t live the way I was.” In December 2008, surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic spent 22 hours replacing 80% of her face with a dead woman’s. She was the first person in America to get one. The first thing she noticed was “the smell of soap.” Her grandson pinched her new nose and said, “Grandma, I love you.” “I still love my husband,” she said.
