“I was released today after about four and a half months of detention.” Dr. Mazen al-Rantisi, a 71-year-old physician from Ramallah known across the West Bank as “the doctor of the poor,” speaks with a fresh wound on his face, inflicted half an hour before his release on October 25, 2026. He says a jailer dragged him to the release room handcuffed behind his back, shackled at the legs and blindfolded, then shoved and kicked him to the ground. Israeli occupation forces seized al-Rantisi from his home in the al-Tireh neighbourhood of Ramallah in June without announcing any reason, and his daughter says he lost around 25 kilograms in their prisons.
He describes Nafha prison as overrun with scabies, affecting nearly 80 percent of the Palestinian hostages held there, with almost no medicine given. When prisoners beg the passing nurse for treatment, he says, they are cursed at, mocked and ridiculed, and he was taunted for taking the chronic medication a court had ordered he receive. He calls on international human rights organisations to intervene, saying Palestinian hostages are beaten and punished at the whim of their jailers with no oversight or accountability.

Lubna Speitan, author of the Greens4Palestine motion “Zionism is racism”, spells out the central obscenity of our age – the grotesque inversion whereby the victims of ethnic cleansing, Apartheid and genocide must constantly fend off accusations from their tormentors that it is they who are the racists.
“We as Palestinians are being silenced and gaslit and vilified [as we] witness the annihilation, the cold-blooded murder of our families, of our people… our children burnt with phosphorus, having to endure amputations with no anaesthetic, having their limbs torn and shredded, their bodies burnt by phosphorus, being starved to death … And to have to sit here … and try to bury my feelings so I can eloquently and diplomatically shield my anger, my rage, my anguish that every Palestinian is feeling, is an insult.” /1

The West Bank is not a suburb of Tel Aviv. Its occupation is unlawful: Israeli soldiers must leave (ICJ 2024).
By omitting context/legal frameworks media like @nytimes have contributed to the “humanitarian camouflage” that frames Israel's crimes as proportionate hence acceptable

I have absolutely no disagreement whatsoever that there is a serious issue of antisemitism in the UK and that schools are part of that problem.
We have a another issue running concurrently which is that Jewish children are literally being taught to see any criticism of Israel, any critique of Zionism, and any support for Palestinian rights as an attack on them as Jewish - literally meaning Jewish pupils are experiencing support for Palestinian rights & liberation as antisemitism.
In addition, there is also the conflation of Jews and Israel that is very deliberately pushed via the establishment, the ruling classes, and our media... telling non-Jewish pupils that their Jewish peers are somehow responsible for, or in some other way tied to, the crimes of Israel.
None of this bodes well for the much needed fight against antisemitism (one which we should all collectively join together to combat).
Where we disagree is the use of this review to largely target Palestine solidarity rather than tackle, identify and address the much larger scale problem of classic antisemitic tropes that infects our schools.
I hope you can agree that it is by far more significant if pupils are making Hitler salutes, Jew jokes, gas noises, and physically assaulting their Jewish peers because they are Jewish... rather than some pupil wearing a free palestine badge that might upset the sensibilities and feelings of a pro-Israel pupil.

You may disagree with the review's methods. But the Community Security Trust recorded 178 antisemitic incidents linked to schools in the first half of 2026 alone, up 59%. Behind every number is a Jewish child. Surely that is where any honest debate should start.

Today Israeli authorities barred me and other European elected representatives from entering the West Bank to meet Palestinian students and civil society leaders, as part of a @ProgIntl delegation.
We knew that by crossing into the occupied Palestinian territories, we risked being detained, interrogated and turned away by Israeli authorities. And that, alas, is exactly what happened.
For more than eight hours, we were held, interrogated and made to feel as though we had done something wrong simply by attempting to enter.
The simple truth is we had done nothing wrong. We went to show our support for the Palestinian people and highlight the terrible injustice and violence being perpetrated against them. We want to ensure that people back home do not look away from the reality of what is happening.
Ultimately, we went to show solidarity. But we left with an even greater determination to speak out. We will not be silenced, and we will not look away. None of us should.
Excellent thread! If you have any interest in education you really should be aware of its contents - please read!
Over the weekend I have been taking ever deeper dives into Sir David Bell's “Independent” Review into Antisemitism in Schools and Colleges.
There is zero doubt in my mind that this sloppy, misleading, and inaccurate report is contribution to a systemic, legal, and institutional dismantling of any support for Palestine, or any education and discussion about Palestinian history and existence within the UK education system.
