For over an hour in 15-foot waves, a Master EOD Tech saved five airmen from drowning. On June 26, 2021, while stationed in Turkey, Senior Master Sgt. Joseph Riemer, an Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician, was on a boat trip in the Aegean Sea when a sudden, violent storm trapped several fellow Airmen in churning waters with near-zero visibility and strong currents. Without hesitation, Riemer dove in multiple times over the course of more than an hour, battling the waves to reach the stranded Airmen, equipping them with flotation devices, and hauling them to safety via a safety line and ultimately saving five lives. When later asked what was going through his mind, he simply replied, “I’m an EOD technician, and EOD technicians solve complex problems.” His selfless actions earned him the Airman’s Medal, a testament to the quiet courage of those who protect others far beyond the bomb suit.
