Amateur baseball is losing one of its most valuable lessons: the satisfaction of earning an opportunity.
Today, a signup form and payment can buy a roster spot, playing time, exposure and even recognition—whether a player is ready to compete or not.
Every player deserves an opportunity to develop. No player is entitled to advancement.
Players need something to chase. Parents deserve honest feedback. Coaches must be willing to say, “You’re not ready yet—but here’s how you get there.”
Standards aren’t punishment. Competition isn’t cruelty.
Earning the opportunity is what makes it mean something.

I’ve spent a lot of time recently thinking about the things I want to create, build, and experience.
I’ve also spent a lot of time wondering whether I can realistically pursue all of them.
I’ve come to realize that I don’t need to be exceptional at everything I explore. Not every interest needs to become a business, and not every idea needs to turn into something bigger.
Sometimes, the opportunity to explore something is enough.
And, in some ways, it’s always been this way.
You can, indeed, do it all. Just not necessarily all at once, or to the same degree.
And that’s perfectly fine.
Hot take:
Umpires are far from perfect.
But the replay and technology available to us makes something very clear:
These guys are really good at what they do and are vastly under appreciated.

Easier to just say “I didn’t get a fair chance.”
This is the way.
Brock Purdy says he was getting 2 reps a practice his rookie year so his mentality became make the most of every rep because everything matters
“Nothing’s given. Every rep matters. I got two reps at the end of each period, and that was my opportunity every day to show the organization and my teammates what I was made of.”
“That’s just the NFL. You’ve got to compete. For me, it was: I’ve got nothing to lose. I’ve just got to go show these guys that I can go out there and rip it, make the right decisions, and be a guy who, if something happens, can go in and be trusted.”
“Before the first preseason game, practice ends and I could see Fred talking to Trent. I saw Fred say, ‘I can’t wait to watch this Purdy kid at the preseason game tomorrow against the Packers.’”
“At that point, my head had just been down. I’m just trying to do good at practice. But I was like, ‘All right, they are noticing.’ The starters and the guys, they’re seeing something.”
“So for me, it was, ‘All right, now I just have to go out in the game, under the lights, in front of everybody, execute, still have that chip on my shoulder and not look back.’”
