### 8 OCTOBER 1993: FIVE YOUNG LIVES STOLEN — APARTHEID'S CRIMES MUST NEVER BE FORGOTTEN
**Issued by: Truth and Solidarity Movement (TRUTH)**
**27 October 2026**
The Truth and Solidarity Movement remembers with profound sadness the five children and teenagers who were killed during an apartheid-era South African Defence Force (SADF) raid on a home in Northcrest, Mthatha, on 8 October 1993.
Mzwandile Mfeya (12), Sandiso Yaso/Yose (12), twin brothers Samora Mpendulo (16) and Sadat Mpendulo (16), and Thando Mthembu (17) were children with lives to live, dreams to pursue and families who loved them. They were killed while sleeping in their beds.
**Five young lives. Five stolen futures. Five families left with unbearable grief.**
According to the account of the incident, the military raid targeted a home belonging to the Mpendulo family on the basis of intelligence alleging that it was being used as an Azanian People's Liberation Army (APLA) arms cache and transit facility. The operation was reportedly authorised by then-State President F.W. de Klerk and the State Security Council.
These allegations and the circumstances surrounding the raid demand careful historical scrutiny and an unflinching commitment to truth. No family should have to carry the pain of losing children while the country struggles to confront the full legacy of apartheid-era state violence.
### APARTHEID WAS NOT JUST A SYSTEM OF DISCRIMINATION — IT WAS A SYSTEM OF STATE VIOLENCE
The Truth and Solidarity Movement condemns the killing of children and the use of military power in circumstances that cost innocent young people their lives. The deaths of these five children stand as a painful reminder of the human cost of apartheid and the devastating consequences of decisions made by those who exercised political and military authority.
We reject any attempt to erase these victims from South Africa's history. Their names must be remembered, their families treated with dignity, and the circumstances of their deaths preserved for future generations.
### OUR DEMANDS
The Truth and Solidarity Movement calls for:
1. **Historical truth:** A transparent public record of the raid, the intelligence used to justify it, and the decisions that led to the operation.
2. **Accountability:** Continued scrutiny of the roles and responsibilities of those involved, consistent with the available evidence and the law.
3. **Dignity for the victims:** Recognition of the five children and meaningful engagement with their surviving families and communities.
4. **Education and remembrance:** The inclusion of this tragedy in South Africa's historical memory so that future generations understand the human cost of apartheid.
5. **Justice without discrimination:** A country in which every life matters and no family is denied dignity because of its race, class or political circumstances.
### WE REMEMBER. WE MOURN. WE DEMAND JUSTICE.
To the families of Mzwandile Mfeya, Sandiso Yaso/Yose, Samora Mpendulo, Sadat Mpendulo and Thando Mthembu: your children must never be reduced to footnotes in history. Their names deserve to be spoken, their lives deserve to be remembered, and their deaths deserve the fullest possible historical examination.
South Africa cannot build genuine reconciliation on silence, selective remembrance or the denial of suffering. Reconciliation requires truth, acknowledgement, accountability and respect for every victim.
The Truth and Solidarity Movement stands for a South Africa in which the lives of children are protected, state power is accountable, and the pain of families is never dismissed.
**Never forget the five children of Northcrest. Never forget the victims of apartheid. Never surrender the pursuit of truth and justice.**
*May their memories endure, and may their families find strength and peace.*
**TRUTH AND SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT**
*Truth. Justice. Solidarity.*

### 27 OCTOBER 2026
**APARTHEID'S VICTIMS DESERVE JUSTICE — NOT ANOTHER COVER-UP!**
**PRESIDENT MEHMET VEFA DAG DEMANDS FULL ACCOUNTABILITY FOR APARTHEID-ERA ATROCITIES**
The Truth and Solidarity Movement (TRUTH), under the leadership of President Mehmet Vefa Dag, condemns in the strongest possible terms any failure to investigate and prosecute those responsible for apartheid-era murders, bombings, torture, kidnappings and the killing of innocent children.
The testimony of former Vlakplaas commander Eugene de Kock before the Khampepe Commission on 26 October 2026 has once again placed a painful question before the nation: **WHO GAVE THE ORDERS, WHO CARRIED THEM OUT, AND WHO PROTECTED THOSE RESPONSIBLE?**
De Kock has alleged that he possessed information about senior police officers and political figures who were connected to apartheid-era operations. He has also accused prosecuting authorities of failing to properly question him about the chain of command.
These are grave allegations. They must be investigated thoroughly, independently and without political interference.
**HOW CAN A NATION CLAIM THAT JUSTICE HAS PREVAILED WHEN FAMILIES ARE STILL WAITING FOR ANSWERS?**
The families of the Cradock Four, the victims of the Motherwell bombing, the victims of the Khotso House and COSATU House bombings, and countless other victims deserve the truth. Their suffering must never be treated as an inconvenience to politicians or former security officials.
TRUTH demands answers from the National Prosecuting Authority:
* Why were outstanding cases referred by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission not brought to a satisfactory conclusion?
* Were credible leads implicating senior officials properly investigated?
* Were witnesses with relevant information interviewed and their evidence preserved?
* Did any political or institutional interference obstruct justice?
* Who will be held accountable if evidence establishes that prosecutions were deliberately obstructed?
These questions cannot be buried under bureaucracy, political excuses or the passage of time.
### NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW
TRUTH demands that the commission and the relevant authorities pursue every credible lead, examine the documentary record, protect witnesses and refer prosecutable cases for independent investigation.
Anyone implicated by admissible evidence must face the law, regardless of their former rank, political party, wealth, influence or historical reputation.
If evidence establishes that senior officers or political leaders ordered, authorised, facilitated or concealed unlawful killings, they must be held accountable through lawful proceedings.
**A uniform does not excuse murder. A political office does not grant immunity. A powerful name must never stand above the law.**
We also reject collective racial blame. The issue is not the guilt of an entire racial group; it is the individual responsibility of those who committed crimes, ordered atrocities or deliberately obstructed justice.
### JUSTICE FOR THE CHILDREN AND THE FAMILIES
For every child who lost a parent, every mother who buried a son, every family that never recovered the remains of a loved one, and every victim who died without seeing justice, this country has a moral obligation to finish the work it promised to do.
Reconciliation without accountability risks becoming an empty political slogan. Forgiveness cannot be demanded from victims while the truth remains incomplete.
TRUTH calls for the publication of a clear account of the outstanding TRC cases, the reasons for their delays, the status of available evidence and the concrete steps being taken to bring responsible individuals before the courts.
We further call for the preservation of historical records, the identification of missing victims' remains wherever possible, and meaningful support for affected families.

### TRUTH SALUTES PRESIDENT LULA ON HIS VICTORY: A CALL FOR PEOPLE-POWER, JUSTICE AND POLITICAL CHANGE
**Date:** 26 October 2026
The Truth and Solidarity Movement (TRUTH) extends its warm congratulations and solidarity to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his political victory. We recognise the significance of political leadership that places social justice, human dignity and the interests of ordinary people at the centre of public life.
President Lula’s political journey reminds us that the struggles of working-class communities, poor families and marginalised people must never be ignored. Across the world, citizens are demanding accountable leadership, economic opportunity, dignity and governments that listen to their needs.
### FROM BRAZIL TO SOUTH AFRICA: THE PEOPLE DESERVE BETTER
The Truth and Solidarity Movement believes that South Africa needs a new chapter of political accountability, inclusive economic development and genuine service delivery.
For too long, many communities have faced unemployment, poverty, unsafe streets, inadequate housing and deep inequalities. Our people deserve more than political promises. They deserve leadership that delivers measurable results and treats every community with dignity.
TRUTH believes that political change must be achieved through democratic participation, peaceful mobilisation, transparent governance and the power of the ballot box.
### OUR MISSION: CHALLENGE THE DA IN FIVE METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITIES
As South Africa approaches the 2026 local government elections, the Truth and Solidarity Movement is preparing to challenge the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the country's five metropolitan municipalities:
* **City of Cape Town**
* **City of Johannesburg**
* **City of Tshwane**
* **City of Ekurhuleni**
* **eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality**
Our mission is to present voters with a credible alternative focused on jobs, housing, public safety, affordable basic services, support for small businesses and accountable municipal leadership.
We will engage communities, listen to residents and campaign for a government that measures success by improvements in people's everyday lives.
**Our message is clear: no political party should take the people for granted.** Every municipality must be judged by its record, its service delivery and its commitment to the public.
### A CALL FOR SOLIDARITY
The Truth and Solidarity Movement extends its message of solidarity to all people fighting poverty, injustice and exclusion around the world. We believe that international solidarity must be built on mutual respect, democratic values and a shared commitment to human dignity.
Our salute to President Lula is also a reminder that South Africa's future belongs to its people. The next chapter must be written through active citizenship, peaceful democratic action and a determination to build a fairer society.
**The time has come for TRUTH to offer South Africans a stronger alternative in all five metropolitan municipalities.**
**Truth. Justice. Solidarity. Accountability.**
