Legendary Manager/Host of 'The Horne Sounds' Pro Wrestling Podcast Jackson C. Horne Reviews The Caribbean Underground Show #62
heartlandbarandgrill.wordpre…
I just sat through Caribbean Underground Show #62 out of that goddamn Warehouse in Bridgetown, Barbados — the place the fire marshal won’t enter without a police escort and a tetanus shot — and I need a drink, a cigarette, and possibly a priest.
This promotion is what happens when somebody locks a bunch of creative writing majors, a leftover ECW lighting board, and a budget that couldn’t buy Vince McMahon’s old socks in a room and says “make wrestling.” It’s equal parts sleazy bar-fight energy, telenovela bullshit, and pure unadulterated nonsense. And somehow… it kind of works in the way a three-car pileup on the interstate works. You can’t look away, but you feel dirty for watching.
We open with Genevieve Ines — the “Carnival Queen” — standing in the middle of the ring like she just stepped out of a Trinidadian Mardi Gras float that got lost and ended up in a crack den. She decrees that every woman in the company has to kneel when she walks by or her pet snake, Anna Conda, will rearrange their collarbones. The crowd throws cups. She kicks one. Classic heel heat. Fine. Then Anna stares into the camera with those dead green eyes like she’s deciding which one of us she’s going to eat first. Creepy? Yes. Effective? Surprisingly. This is the kind of old-school bully heat that actually makes you want to see somebody knock her crown off. I’ll allow it.
Then we get the Outlander package. Blaire Rendell, dressed like a 1940s British army nurse who just escaped a Hallmark Channel movie, screaming about the stones and the temporal energy and “Jamie—nay, Jack!” while Jack Fraiser sits in the loading bay drinking coffee out of a thermos like a man waiting for a bus that’s three hours late. He looks at his watch. Sips. Walks off. No reaction. That’s the best piece of comedy on the show. The Canadian lumberjack is so done with this time-travel romance nonsense that he doesn’t even give it the dignity of a facial expression. That’s real character work. Somebody write that down.
Brad Hollister and Barclay the Man-Eating Shark. I don’t even know where to start. A seven-foot foam shark mascot who keeps destroying light stands and nearly taking the interviewer’s teeth out while the PR guy spins “unscheduled athletic anomaly” for a loss. It’s so stupid it loops around to being entertaining. Barclay is the spiritual successor to every bad mascot gimmick from the territories that somehow survived. God help us.
Allison Shaw doesn’t kneel. Anna Conda puts her to sleep against a cinderblock wall with the Anaconda Vice like she’s putting out the trash. Cold. Efficient. Heat. Good. Then Nora Parker and Babs Brickowski storm Silvio’s office and basically threaten to shut the place down if management doesn’t rein in the carnival queen and her pet python. Silvio gives them the classic “I’ll look into it” runaround while smiling like a man who’s already counting the extra tickets the controversy will sell. Classic authority-figure cowardice. This is the kind of locker-room tension that actually builds something. Keep going.
Jack Fraiser vs. Alejendro del Nombre for the number-one contender spot. Actual wrestling! Jack is a big, stiff, functional Canadian strongman who looks like he should be loading lumber instead of cutting promos. Alejendro is all intensity and corporate-speak bullshit. They work a solid, hard-hitting match. Jack hits the Canadian National Railaway (I refuse to call it anything else) and becomes the number-one contender. Clean finish. Psychology. Selling. Somebody in that Warehouse remembered what professional wrestling is supposed to look like for fifteen minutes. Fraiser looks like a credible threat to Blake Martin. Good. Put them in a building and let them work.
Then the main event: Murder Hornets vs. Alpha Sigma Sigma. Frat-boy heels versus masked insect psychos managed by a man waving a giant pencil screaming “ERASE!” It’s cartoon violence. It’s chaotic. The Hornets win clean… and then the lights go red, the tribal drums hit, and the Fatu brothers — Hawaii Five-One-Five-O, for Christ’s sake — storm in, destroy everybody, and hold up the tag titles like they just conquered the Pacific. No match. No build. Just two Samoan wrecking balls showing up and saying “we’re here now, deal with it.” It’s the most territory-style “we’ve got big guys, let’s use them” booking I’ve seen in years. I should hate it. Part of me does. The other part is cackling because at least somebody still understands the value of a sudden, violent statement.
Closing with Blake Martin’s clinical “I am the science of a champion” promo while the screen strobes through every chaotic image from the night. The man talks like a robot who studied under Kurt Angle’s accountant. Perfect contrast to the Canadian lumberjack.
Look… Caribbean Underground is a mess. It’s over-written, over-produced in the cheap places, under-produced in the important ones, full of gimmicks that would get you laughed out of Louisville in 1985, and somehow still more entertaining than three hours of carefully focus-grouped corporate wrestling. They understand heat. They understand characters who are larger than life. They understand that the audience in that Warehouse wants blood, chaos, and personality more than they want perfect chain wrestling.
Is it great wrestling? No. Is it professional by any traditional standard? Barely. But it’s got more personality in one Genevieve Ines sneer than most promotions manage in a month.
Just for the love of God, somebody tell the shark to stop eating the catering. And keep Jack Fraiser’s coffee thermos full. That man is the only sane person left in Barbados.
