Some awards celebrate achievement. Others celebrate impact that continues to ripple across communities. Congratulations to Dr. @HellinaNigatu (Ethiopia), recipient of the 2026 Maathai Impact Award at @DeepIndaba , and Abdel-aziz Harane Abounounou (Chad), this year's Runner-Up. Your work reminds us that the future of AI in Africa is being shaped by people who are building, mentoring, and creating opportunities that extend far beyond themselves. The Maathai Impact Award honours the enduring legacy of Wangari Maathai, recognising individuals whose ideas and actions prove that meaningful change begins with people who choose to serve their communities and inspire others. As we celebrate this year's recipients at #DLI2026, we are reminded of a moment that remains deeply significant to us. In 2019, our Founder, @bayoadekanmbi , received the Maathai Impact Award in Kenya in recognition of his work in training Nigerian data scientists and strengthening the African Machine Learning and AI ecosystem. That recognition affirmed a belief that has guided @dsn_ai_network from the very beginning: when you invest in people, you multiply impact. This year, as we marks 10 years of building AI talent, nurturing research, and expanding opportunities across Africa, that belief remains unchanged. Every learner trained, every community empowered, every researcher supported, and every solution built contributes to a stronger African AI ecosystem. To this year's awardees, thank you for carrying that vision forward. Your work inspires the next generation of builders, researchers, and innovators across the continent. Congratulations once again, and here's to many more stories of African excellence. #DataScienceNigeria #DLI2026 #Indaba2026 #ImoWa #DLIWorkshop2026 #MattaiAward @vukosi @AI4Dev @opsy_girl @SakinatTijani @SoufianeHourri
