The final selected artist announcement to create a sculpture for the 2024 @MFAH Fall Fest: Myths & Leyendas is Alma Soto!
Alma (A.K.A. Mamasoto) is a graphic designer & Houstonian 30+ years, and an Art Institute graduate who runs Mamasoto Design & Media home studio (19+yrs)!
The inspiration for her sculpture comes from the Mayan/Pre-Columbian myth of the hummingbird - the crowned courier created by the gods to serve as the messenger between the divine and mortals. Alma invites visitors to interact and connect their own messages to the heavens. 🌺🕊️
Jean Sandoval is the fifth of six selected artists we’re highlighting this week that will be creating a sculpture for the @MFAH Fall Fest 2024: Myths & Leyendas! They will be making a seven-foot-tall depiction of the leyenda, El Hombre Pajaro. 🦅
“My mother told me of it once when we were visiting family in Monterrey. I’d spend hours watching Spanish supernatural television waiting for updates and footage of ‘flying humanoids.’ It is a bird-like creature, incredibly tall, and is said to have a flat, human-like face."
ALMAAHH & @MFAH Fall Fest selected artist 4 of 6: Loriana Espinel!
“Chiribiquete, a national park in Colombia, was a center of pre-Hispanic cosmogonic South American thought, where the jaguar is the king, & the Boa-Anaconda is his sister.
Ashley Raquel, 3/6 artists selected to create a sculpture at the @MFAH Fall Festival: Myths & Leyendas!
“I will be creating a sculpture of “Lechuza, the Witch Owl”, a shapeshifter of the night, a vengeful
deceiving creature who can look like a beautiful woman or innocent owl.🦉
Born in Mexico, raised in Texas, Trejo has found a deep passion in expressing her dark life experiences through art.
Her work honors her emotional pain, revealing the profound beauty she finds in the growth and healing that can emerge from misery. 🦉
Diana Gonzalez is another @MFAH Myths & Leyendas selected artist for this year’s Fall Fest!
“Storytelling is a big part of how I was raised & how I learned about Colombia while living here in the US. Through spoken words, one learns values & traditions deep within folklore..."
I want to tell a story through my large-scale sculpture of the famous legend in Colombia called la “Leyenda de Guatavita”, a myth high up in the mountains of Bogota in a lagoon where one might see a figure through the fog floating on a full moon.”🌕
