#AbrahamLincoln and Stephen Douglas met in Alton for the last for their seven debates today in 1858. While Douglas won their Senate race, Lincoln emerged from the debates as a national voice against #slavery, putting him in position to win the presidency in 1860.
As a presidential candidate, #AbrahamLincoln assured people that he did not want to deepen divisions with slave states. It did no good. Southern states started announcing secession shortly after his election. #AbeSays

#AbrahamLincoln and Stephen Douglas met for the sixth of their seven debates today in 1858.
Lincoln condemned #slavery but also rejected "political and social equality between the white and black races." His views would change significantly before his death in 1865.
#AbrahamLincoln regularly found new ways to mock Stephen Douglas's weak attempts to justify #slavery. #AbeSays
