Happy birthday, Papa. Sitting in Lalowal, a small village, kilometres away from Pakistan, in the backyard of the dispensary where my father was born. The place from where it all began. Where my grandfather and grandmother lived before they moved to Delhi. The mango orchards, fields and flowing rivers that featured in all their stories about their lives here. And the place where decades later my father took the whole family back to. Today all of us went to my father’s birthplace to commemorate his life, his story, his memory. My father, who took great pride in telling the world that his birthplace was Lalowal, everyone I met today took pride in sharing that they live in the village where Balbir Punj was born. Today I stepped into my father’s other legacy. That of seeing those who would be invisible to many. That of building relationships with families of those who our ancestors were connected with. That of rebuilding our legacy when all seemed lost in the busyness of life. That of returning phone calls from those in the village no matter how busy life got. That of asking them about their extended families and checking on the littlest of things. That of giving them comfort and confidence that they have a home in Delhi. That of opening doors when they thought that there was a wall in front of them. That of always carrying his light so lightly. That of making today happen - when we were joined by many members of our extended family. The youngest person to walk into the house where it all began is my 18 month old nephew. My father has left this physical world but the fragrance of his love and the light of his being fills our world and hearts. Young men in the village who have been inspired by him reminded me what he would often say - keep doing your karma. He reconnected us all to our roots. At a time when most of us are just floating listlessly, papa has shown us what a well lived life looks like. He would say that we are all twigs on a tree and without our roots we are all lost. Here’s to you papa - celebrating your spirit, always lifting, always being the light, always spreading joy. Today and everyday we soak in your love. To you, always so rooted and yet so vast. To your values that are our compass. You live on in so many ways and through all of us ❤️ Always with @balbirpunj
