After a long road I'm proud that my book "Die Macht Der Diaspora" for @Ullstein, which explores the history of diasporas in Germany will be on sale from 29 September. It looks at diasporas from Ukraine, the Western Balkans, Turkey, Iran and the Arab World

Israeli forces have detained dozens of Syrians from the country’s south, some of them teenage boys taken from farms and family homes. Their families still don’t know where they are being held or why, reports @subhash_anagha for @newlinesmag. newlinesmag.com/reportage/th…

GENEVA, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Fuel shortages in Yemen's besieged city of Taiz have forced one hospital to cut the number of incubators it can operate from 40 to 10, putting newborn babies at risk as weeks of fighting choke off vital supplies and deepen a humanitarian crisis affecting hundreds of thousands of people.
"There's no oxygen, there's no fuel to run the incubators, to keep the babies warm," said Nada Ahmed, a nurse in the neonatal unit of the Yemeni-Swedish Hospital for Maternity and Childhood.
Nawal Najeeb, a supervisor in the neonatal unit, warned the facility could be forced to halt operations if fuel supplies do not arrive.
"It will be a catastrophe for the babies, a catastrophe of deaths and disabilities."
Taiz has been largely isolated since October 3, with fightingpreventing humanitarian supplies from entering and civilians from leaving, following an escalation in clashes between the Saudi-backed government and the Iran-aligned Houthi movement.

Slow-building controversy here. Were the bishops duped? Should they have known?

+Naumann: “The bishops were assured that no photographs would be made public. They came to have a discussion on important policy matters. As Catholic bishops, they pray with everyone, but do not endorse candidates or political parties.”

What the downfall of Orbán and Vučić may tell us about the limitations of competitive authoritarianism & civil society’s power… looking forward to takes from Levitsky, Way, Bunce, Chenoweth, Tufekci & many more… someone please focus also on young women activists & their roles…
Replying to @DimitarBechev
What's interesting - and theory relevant - is that the challenge came from civil society. Not established political parties. Several waves of protest since 2021 built momentum. People learned how to self-organise and eventually compete in elections.

Jordanian Army announced the launch of "Jordanian Deterrence" Operation, carrying out airstrikes in #Daraa province - under Government control - in response to the recent terrorist attack on a Church in Jordan (10 killed).
Multiple locations were bombed in the Southern and Eastern countryside, but so far the targets & potential casualties remain unknown.
This is an unprecedented situation.

Breaking.
#Daraa countryside, close to the Jordanian border, was targeted by airstrikes.
Attacks are believed to be carried out by Jordanian Air Force, which would be a first since Assad's fall.

And, here we go.
Jordan has just announced airstrikes against a jihadi group in Daraa (!), southern Syria. Earlier, the state denied links to outside organizations, it seems Amman by evening changed that view.
There is only one group they could be targeting there.

With the closure of the Black Sea demand for transporting freight by roan in Russia rouse with the costs for the route from Turkey to Russia rising by 50-100% and for the Chinese one by 15-20% but due to higher taxes and fuel price it's not really more profitable.
The new Serbian government will be so absorbed with reform as well as economic problems I doubt it will have much of a foreign policy at all.
The main difference will be less preoccupation with looking like a grand historical player, more focus on fixing the roads
Re Russian influence: Russia is embedded because of its emotional appeal and footprint in the energy sector. Vucic was not Putin's proxy but at best a fellow traveller. The next Serbian leader might downgrade but not cut ties. Further: yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780…
But while Russian and Russia-facing analysts might be preoccupied with what Belgrade says to Moscow, they're going to have to adjust to a world where a Serbian government more interested in integrating with the EU system will say nice things about Russia yet do nothing to help it
