Spirit, that made those heroes dare
To die, and leave their children free,
Bid Time and Nature gently spare
The shaft we raise to them and thee. #CubaFreedom

Mayor Rick Blangiardi issued the following tribute for his dear friend June Jones, whose death was announced today:
“I am deeply saddened by the sudden passing of June Jones. Coach Jones was not only a tremendous innovative football coach, but someone I was fortunate to know personally as a former player while I was coaching, who then became a lifelong friend.
I have so many great memories of our time together, particularly during my years at KHON and KGMB, where we were proud to be the home of The June Jones Show.
I will never forget that magical 2007 season, when June led the University of Hawaiʻi Warriors on an incredible undefeated regular-season run to the Sugar Bowl. What he accomplished that year was about so much more than football. He brought our entire state together, gave us something to believe in, and made Hawaiʻi proud on a national stage.
June had a special connection with Hawaiʻi and its people. He believed in his players, he believed in this community, and he showed what was possible when you give people an opportunity to succeed.
I will always cherish our friendship and the memories we shared. June left an extraordinary legacy, not just in the game of football, but in the lives of so many people he touched along the way.
My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, his friends, his former players, and everyone who loved and admired him. We have lost a great coach, a great friend, and someone who will always hold a special place in Hawaiʻi’s history.”

🇺🇸 MOH Monday 🇺🇸
Army 1st Lt. Victor Leonard Kandle (1921–1944)
The 3rd Infantry Division platoon leader earned the posthumous MoH for Oct. 9, 1944, actions near La Forge, France. Leading a 16-man patrol, he dueled and killed a German officer at point-blank range, destroyed machine-gun positions under fire, and charged alone into a fortified house, forcing 32 enemies to surrender. His leadership broke a 2-day stalemate—capturing/killing 3 officers + 54 enlisted and seizing 3 strongpoints.
Kandle had already captured five prisoners earlier that day. When machine-gun fire opened from a position his patrol had bypassed in dense fog, he closed to within 15 yards, killed the gunner, and directed the destruction of a second crew and its rifle security. He then set a base of fire and rushed alone across open ground in full view of the enemy, smashed through a barricaded door, and compelled two officers and 30 enlisted men inside to give up.
A Roy, Washington, native and Puyallup High School Class of 1939, he enlisted in 1940, earned a battlefield commission to second lieutenant in Italy in December 1943, and was promoted to first lieutenant the following May after repeated displays of leadership. He was killed on Dec. 31, 1944, while leading his platoon against a German attack in the Colmar Pocket.
Buried at Epinal American Cemetery, he is remembered by Kandle Pool in Tacoma, a 2019 high-school memorial attended by his son and grandson, and a 2024 dedication of the Puyallup City Hall lobby in his honor. The Medal of Honor was presented to his wife, Marigene, in May 1945.
