The taper blues are real. But feeling terrible doesn't necessarily mean your swimmers aren't ready to race. Understanding what's happening in the body can help coaches manage expectations and build athlete confidence. Coaches, how do you handle the taper blues? #ASCA #SwimCoach #Taper

What makes a great swim coach? It's not just the workouts you write, the technique you teach, or the knowledge you bring to the pool. The coaches who make the biggest impact are the ones who make athletes feel seen, valued, and supported. Technical knowledge matters. But relationships are what athletes remember. What's one quality you remember most about your favorite coach? #ASCA #SwimCoach #Relationships #Technique #Knowledge

Our second speaker is University of Tennessee's Director of Swimming & Diving, Matt Kredich! Register today at ow.ly/En4t5100gow Under his leadership, Tennessee's women's team captured SEC Championships in 2020 and 2022, earning the program's first conference title. His programs have produced numerous SEC and NCAA champions and All-Americans. In 2025, both Tennessee's men's and women's teams finished fifth at the NCAA Championships, marking the first time in program history both teams achieved that result in the same season. Kredich has coached 24 Olympians who competed at Tennessee, including Olympic medalists Christine Magnuson, Erika Connolly (formerly Erika Brown), Mona McSharry, Molly Hannis, Kira Toussaint, and Lyubomir Epitropov. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, a program-record 17 current and former Tennessee swimmers and divers competed. Tennessee's tradition of developing elite breaststroke talent continues with current swimmer McKenzie Siroky, who earned silver in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2026 NCAA Championships. Alongside McSharry's international success, Siroky's achievement highlights Tennessee's ability to develop athletes who excel at the highest levels of collegiate and international swimming. Kredich has also represented USA Swimming internationally, serving as head coach at the 2013 World University Games and the 2015 and 2019 Pan American Games. His coaching achievements include four SEC Women's Coach of the Year honors and the 2013 SwimSwam National College Coach of the Year award. #PCC26 #ASCAPCC #Vols #GBO #VolsNation

Programming part 10: Posterior Circuits This circuit combines mobility drills with strength and power exercises for an early-season workout. There are two different hip hinge drills for deadlifts not shown in last week’s video. A banded hip hinge row combines an upper- and lower-body hip hinge exercise and helps develop the swimming context for a hip hinge. Scapula and low trap activation drills precede the seated row to help the athlete feel the upper- and lower-back movement required for the exercise. The movement consists of holding straight arms while trying to pull solely with the scapula, while the lower trap is engaged to place the back in position. A band triceps is included along with kettlebell swings for power. The kettlebell set should consist of about 10 repetitions, starting with a small range of motion for three repetitions, increasing intensity for three, and four intense swings on the last four.

Part 8 of the 12-part programming series focuses on developing hip hinge patterns. Many strength exercises that support swimming stability and power require an efficient hip hinge with a neutral spine. The movement is difficult for some individuals, and several mobility drills can help train the patterns. Floor and standing cat-dog help develop hip mobility, and the dowel and chest band emphasize a neutral spine. During the dowel hinge, the athlete keeps one hand on the hip and the other on the head while holding the dowel. As long as the dowel stays in contact with the head, spine, and hips, the spine stays neutral. Another technique is to use a band anchored at the chest and hips. A taut band in this position indicates the spine is in the correct position. Hinging with shoulder-height dumbbells with a neutral spine helps the athlete feel additional load during the movement, and waist-band hinging emphasizes the muscles of the hips during the movement.
