In our work in prisons we see the high number of prisoners who were excluded from education at an early age and we know education is a protective factor to address the exclusion to prison pipeline. @AVPIreland @TraumaRespEd

It is estimated there are upwards of 5,000 children with a parent in prison in Ireland on any given day with over 10,000 children affected each year. It is v important measures like this are also seen in the context of reducing the harm of imprisonment to children and families.

In Ep 1, Marty remembers being a young child realising there were places he wasn't welcome. Adventures with pals were often met with explicit instruction from guards to stay clear of the better off communities. An 'us and them' was created long before he ever committed a crime.

In episode 1 Anto, remembers school and how his dyslexia was neglected and judged. Years on, he is finding out that he has a great appetite for learning, teachers were wrong to use such terms, and things could have been different with the right supports.
