Amazing story. 🫡
In the dark, he felt something tighten against his leg.
It was a tripwire.
He had a few seconds to decide, and he chose to lie down on top of the grenade.
It was the night of 9 February 2008, near Sangin in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
A four-man patrol from 40 Commando, Royal Marines, was moving through a compound on a reconnaissance mission.
It was pitch black.
At the front of the patrol was a 24-year-old lance corporal from Solihull in the West Midlands.
He had joined the Royal Marines in November 2000. He had served three tours in Iraq. Only three months earlier, in November 2007, he had kept a comrade who had been shot in the chest alive for more than twenty minutes under heavy fire, until the medic could reach them.
A week after that, he was injured in a road accident and flown home with a suspected broken leg.
He went through intensive physiotherapy and was back in Afghanistan within weeks.
His name was Matt Croucher.
As he moved forward that night, he felt the wire against his leg.
He looked down.
He had set off a grenade.
There was no time to run. There was nowhere to go. The other marines were close enough that the blast could kill them.
So Matt did something almost impossible to imagine.
He threw himself to the ground on top of the grenade.
He used his rucksack to pin it to the floor. He pulled his legs up tight to his body.
And he waited for it to go off.
It exploded.
The blast threw him some distance. It ripped the rucksack off his back. His body armour and helmet were pitted with fragments. A large lithium battery in his pack, used to power the patrol's electronic equipment, was ruptured and burst into flames.
And somehow, he was alive.
His rucksack and body armour had taken the force of the explosion. He had a nosebleed, perforated eardrums and was badly shaken.
That was all.
Of the rest of the patrol, one man had managed to get round the corner of a building. The patrol commander had thrown himself to the ground and was hit by a small fragment in the face, a superficial wound.
The fourth man had not had time to react at all. He was still on his feet, well within the grenade's lethal range.
Matt's body, and the pack beneath it, had been between that man and the blast.
A medic recommended that Matt be evacuated.
He refused.
The marines knew the explosion would bring enemy fighters to investigate. They stayed, set an ambush, and fought them.
Matt was originally put forward for the Victoria Cross. Because the grenade was a booby trap rather than an act of an enemy in front of him, the award he received was the George Cross, which recognises the same level of courage when no enemy is present.
It was announced on 23 July 2008.
On 30 October 2008, Queen Elizabeth II presented him with the George Cross at Buckingham Palace.
He was one of only a handful of living recipients of the medal.
His home town of Solihull gave him the Freedom of the Borough that December. He later wrote a book about his experiences, called Bulletproof.
The rucksack that saved his life, burned and torn, has been kept and displayed alongside his medals.
Most acts of heroism end with a funeral.
Matt Croucher's ended with a nosebleed, and three friends who got to go home.

A ticket and a fine would have done. 7 officers for an old lady jumping a red light is overkill. This isn’t the right way to deal with this situation
Congratulations to the @metpoliceuk fighting the crime that really matters, 7 police officers time well spent
Great news for the 🛺 rickshaw-ripoff in London
London’s rickshaw trade is about to see some big changes, and quite rightly so.
TfL is bringing in new regulations requiring drivers and operators to be licensed, DBS checked and properly insured, alongside vehicle safety checks and other requirements.
For far too long, this trade has operated with very little regulation. Passengers deserve to know they’re getting into a vehicle that is safe, properly insured and driven by somebody who has been appropriately vetted.
It’s about time there was some accountability. London’s streets need proper standards, and nobody should be above them.

Over 108 years living in the same house
Elsie Allcock was born on 28 June 1918 in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire, England, UK. It was the tail end of the First World War. King George V was still the king.
She has seen two world wars and two royal coronations all from the comfort of the two-bedroom terrace home in Huthwaite.
Elsie left school at the age of 14 and stayed at home to help look after the family following the death of her mother, Eliza, who died from pneumonia in 1932.
When she married Bill Allcock in 1941, they both decided to continue living in the house with her father.
In 1960, Elsie bought her childhood home for £250. Her father, Mark Hall, who worked as a coal miner, had started renting the house for seven shillings and sixpence in 1902.

Danny Tommo was remanded in custody on the 25th September for popping an empty migrant boat
His trial has now been set for the 1st June 2027
That will be 249 days in prison without trial
He has been found guilty of no crimes
This is not justice
It's political persecution

Two-tier justice will be under the microscope when Tommy @TRobinsonNewEra is to be sentenced on 16 Dec. In Feb Kristofer Deichler, 47, Jatinder Kamra, 46 & Sukhraj Singh, 39, were convicted of harassment without violence to BBC jouro @CatrinNye.
Despite visiting her home they only got 200 hours Community Service.
Methinks that will not be Tommy's fate.

When this kind of violence is allowed by the police, it marks the end of a decent society
We are all tired of seeing @YoungBobRB be assaulted for his often fair political opinion.
@metpoliceuk can you start locking people up please, political violence should not be tolerated!
June next year before Danny Tommo gets a ‘fair’ hearing? It’s already unfair. He should never have been remanded in the first place

Folks, it would have been No.1 on Amazon 3 days ago.
But there was some strange glitch on Amazon which meant it was going unranked. We had to spend a couple of hours with them yesterday working out what the glitch was. Even 3rd tier Amazon support couldn't fix it.
It only takes about 700 copies per day to get to No.1. Every day we were selling 3x as many as required.
With "Manifesto" Boris Johnson's publisher contacted us to say "how did you knock him off No.1"? BoJo's publisher is a multi-million pound global brand! And BoJo and his publisher had spent weeks/months in the mainstream media pumping Bojo's useless narcissism.
In 2024 Amazon phoned on the 2nd day to say "you need to ship your inventory to us, it's impossible for you ship 1000 items per day".
Funny how a rag-tag bunch of contrarians can do what global corporations say is impossible.
Power to the People, as Citizen Smith would say.
