Resilience reflects decades of investment, diversification and international cooperation.
But it also raises difficult questions: What happens when that cooperation weakens? Could greater market resilience have unintended geopolitical consequences?
And energy security matters to producers, too.

Resilience is neither cheap nor built overnight.
That was my opening message at the IMF's Regional Economic Outlook launch in #Dubai.
Global energy markets have absorbed unprecedented disruption in the Middle East. But the economic costs extend far beyond what oil prices reveal.

The Middle East’s oil advantage goes beyond scale and cost. The UAE and Saudi Arabia also produce some of the world’s lowest carbon intensity oil.

One of the most striking things about being in the #UAE 🇦🇪 recently was the contrast between recent geopolitical headlines and life on the ground. Despite a major conflict next door, in #Dubai it was very much business as usual.
It says a lot about the resilience this region has built and its ability to keep investing, doing business and looking ahead despite geopolitical shocks.

AI can also make energy use and production more efficient.
The IEA estimates that widespread adoption of existing AI applications in buildings could save around 300 TWh of electricity every year, roughly equal to the combined annual generation of Australia and New Zealand.
Energy companies are also using AI to optimize production. Aramco says AI technologies contributed to a 15% increase in output at its Khurais oil field.

Energy leaders at @GastechEvent 2026 explored how better measurement, leak detection, and gas monetisation can help reduce methane emissions while recovering lost value. Zubin Bamji, Manager, Global Flaring and Methane Reduction (GFMR) Partnership, @WorldBankGroup, highlighted leadership commitment as critical to accelerating methane reduction, while the wider discussion called for stronger collaboration across the gas value chain.

Resilience is a word we hear everywhere in energy. What does it actually mean?
At #Gastech2026, I explored this question with Cristian Signoretto of @eni Tom Summers of @Shell & De la Rey Venter of MidOcean Energy, looking at #LNG supply chains that can absorb disruption, adapt and continue delivering energy.
My takeaway: resilience is not about avoiding disruption - that is simply not realistic. It’s about having enough options to adapt when disruption comes.

“The End of the Energy Market? Are We in the Age of the Strategic Bloc? A provocative title for a very interactive Executive Boardroom discussion I moderated in Bangkok.
My main takeaway: no one can do it alone.
Trade flows may shift, partnerships may change and geopolitical fragmentation may deepen. But #energy remains deeply interconnected.

From Brazil and Guyana to Namibia and the Gulf of America, deepwater projects are expanding the world’s supply options and reducing dependence on any single region.
