Laksamana Keumalahayati (often simply referred to as Malahayati) was a 16th-century naval commander of the Aceh Sultanate and is widely recognized as the world's first female admiral. Born into a prominent seafaring lineage, she was the daughter of Admiral Mahmud Syah and the granddaughter of Sultan Ibrahim Ali Mughayat Syah, the founder of the Aceh Sultanate. Early Life & Military Training Malahayati received formal military training at Ma'had Baitul Maqdis, the royal military academy of Aceh. There, she studied naval strategy, combat, and leadership alongside male officers. Her life took a decisive turn during a fierce naval battle against the Portuguese in the Malacca Strait, where her husband, a naval commander, was killed in action. The Inong Balee Fleet Driven by grief and determination, Malahayati petitioned Sultan Alauddin Riayat Syah al-Mukammil to form a dedicated military branch. She established the Pasukan Inong Balee (Army of Widows), an all-female combat unit composed primarily of women who had lost their husbands in war. Strength: The force grew to roughly 2,000 to 3,000 soldiers. Base: They built Benteng Inong Balee (Inong Balee Fort) overlooking the Bay of Krueng Raya to defend the coastline. Operations: The fleet commanded warships equipped with heavy cannons, conducting coastal patrols and engaging foreign hostile fleets. Key Battles & Historical Impact 1. The Defeat of Cornelis de Houtman (1599) When Dutch expedition leader Cornelis de Houtman arrived in Aceh in 1599, initial trade interactions turned hostile. De Houtman attempted to attack the port. Malahayati led the Inong Balee fleet into combat aboard her flagship. During the deck-to-deck engagement on September 11, 1599, Malahayati killed Cornelis de Houtman in single combat using a traditional Acehnese rencong dagger and captured his brother, Frederick de Houtman. 2. Dutch Diplomacy (1601) Following the capture of Dutch vessels and blockade of their trade routes, Prince Maurits of Nassau sent diplomatic envoys to Aceh with formal letters of apology and compensation. Malahayati negotiated directly with the emissaries, securing a ceasefire and reparations before releasing the captives. 3. English Negotiations (1602) Recognizing Malahayati's authority over the Malacca Strait, English commander Sir James Lancaster was sent by Queen Elizabeth I with a peaceful diplomatic mission. Malahayati served as the chief negotiator, opening trade routes for England while maintaining Aceh's sovereignty. Legacy Laksamana Keumalahayati died in combat around 1615 while defending Krueng Raya against a Portuguese naval attack. She was buried on the slopes of Bukit Kota Dalam in Aceh Besar. In November 2017, President Joko Widodo officially declared her a National Hero. Her name remains a symbol of maritime strength and female leadership, commemorated through naval frigates (KRI Malahayati), ports, universities, and military infrastructure.
