I’m still processing something that happened today, and I am fucking LIVID.
People with Long COVID have to be among the most ruthlessly exploited patients on the planet.
The grift is absolutely shameless.
These predators enter patient communities, listen to people describe their suffering, their cognitive difficulties, their desperation for relief… and see a BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY.
They hear “brain fog” and think “easy target.”
Let me tell you something: Some of the most intelligent people I’ve ever met have Long COVID.
Cognitive impairment is not stupidity. Desperation is not gullibility. And chronic illness is not your fucking business model.
We’ve got people discussing serious medical conditions, including chronic kidney failure, and you’re swooping in to sell them $200 “frequency-infused” sugar pills disguised as a detox protocol?
Are you FUCKING KIDDING ME?
These people need medical care. They need research. They need treatments. They need someone to actually listen.
They don’t need another parasite trying to monetize their suffering.
If you’re lurking in chronic illness communities looking for vulnerable people to sell your pseudoscientific bullshit to, GET THE FUCK OUT.
Go back to whatever cave you crawled out of, you fucking vampires.
Sick people are not your sales leads.
And everyone watching this happen should be calling it out.

Long COVID is Long COVID.
MECFS is the result of long covid, long flu, long EBV, long XYZ in a subset of each virus that results in a chronic infection.
It failed because on a standalone basis none of the current trials will work. Antivirals required for other things to work

Al Pacino says he passed out with COVID in his apartment, woke up to five paramedics in his living room, and was told his pulse had stopped
"I felt I left the Earth when I passed out."
"Next thing I know, I open my eyes and there's five paramedics in my living room."
"And they were my doctors, but I couldn't recognize them from head to toe."
"But they said, my pulse had stopped."
The last thing he remembers is asking the name of the guy filling him up with fluids. Then he wakes up to two doctors in what looked like space suits, and his first thought is that it looks like a film set. Fifty years in front of cameras will do that.

My uncle spent 40 years as a high school teacher. Saved $250k in a modest nest egg.
At 78, he developed dementia and needed memory care.
The facility cost $8,500 a month.
When his savings ran out after two and a half years, the social worker handed my cousin a stack of paperwork.
She explained the rule: "Medicaid won't cover a single day until he has less than $2,000 in total liquid assets."
He had to sell his car, cash out his remaining life insurance, and empty his checking account just to qualify for basic care.
Forty years of discipline, erased down to two thousand dollars so he could die in a shared room.
They don't let working class families leave a legacy.
They make sure you die with zero before they hand you a safety net.

There’s a saying: “the purpose of a system is what it does.” Don’t look at mission statements, goals, or intentions. Talk is cheap; look at outcomes.
I’ve been vocally against Long COVID treatment trials, the ones testing repurposed drugs with no mechanistic rationale, because they don’t advance our understanding of the disease. I assumed the people designing these trials, and the sick people pushing for them, just didn’t see this and needed to be convinced.
I don’t think that’s the case anymore.
Look at what these trials actually produce. Every time, they either fail or nearly fail. Paxlovid failed. LDN failed. Ivabradine failed. Etc., etc. When a trial fails, no one accepts it. “Well, it works for me.” “It worked for someone I know.” “If you massage the data this way, it looks like it might benefit this handful of people.”
The LDN trial that just came out is a perfect example. 44% of people on LDN improved. So did 41% of people on placebo. People improve for all kinds of reasons.
People who want to try the drug will try the drug. People who couldn’t get it before still can’t.
So these trials produce no knowledge, no access, and no closure. But they do produce one thing: hope. For the 2 or 3 years a trial runs, people tell themselves something is being done. They think about it when they’re struggling to make it through the day.
That hope has value. For years, I’ve watched people point to upcoming trials to talk others out of suicide. This is bleak, serious stuff. But it never lasts. So when one trial ends, everyone moves on to the next, and the cycle starts over.
You see this with the treatments themselves: LDN, rapamycin, oxalate, Anktiva, blood cleaning, stellate ganglion block, etc. One hot fad after another. When enough people have tried it and realized it doesn’t work, it fades from popularity for a while (and sometimes comes back after enough people have forgotten). Notice what kills a fad. It’s never a trial result.
But the truth is this is all pointless busy work. Elaborately packaged false hope. Ultimately, it doesn’t help anyone get better.
Can you imagine if this is how we approached cancer? Just test random Reddit fads? We deserve better.
