This week’s “Inside the Trail” by Rudy Carpenter tackles a situation every recruiting family should understand.
What happens when the coach recruiting your athlete suddenly takes another job?
Does the offer still stand? Who’s advocating for your athlete now?
The coach may have left. Does the program’s commitment remain?

Also, no one should assume that good coaching and evaluation of QBs is something all college and NFL evaluators are good at doing. There are plenty who coach it that are so far over their head that they ruin the player instead of maximize his performance!
I was sitting at the Baccarat Bar at the Wynn recently, visiting with the father of a high school quarterback, discussing QB play. (Great spot, by the way. Highly recommend.) Today, he sent me this video with a simple message: “EXACTLY what we were talking about.”
Couldn't agree more.
I've watched this happen for over 20 years. We identify quarterbacks with exceptional physical traits, reward them with recruiting rankings, and too often mistake their athletic advantage for mastery of the position.
At the high school level, a quarterback can be the best athlete on the field and overcome poor decisions with superior physical ability. But as the competition improves, those advantages narrow. Suddenly, identifying coverage, managing protection, processing progressions, and delivering accurately within a compressed window become the difference between playing quarterback and simply making plays.
The concern isn't that we're evaluating physical traits. Those matter. It's that we're often evaluating what is easiest to measure rather than what is most important to project.
A 70-yard throw tells me something about arm strength. It tells me very little about whether that quarterback can recognize a rotating safety, eliminate a covered primary, and deliver the ball to his second option before panic sets in.
That's the evaluation challenge, and more importantly, the development opportunity.
The quarterback position is not a throwing position. It is a command position. Physical talent creates opportunity. Processing, decision-making, and repeatable accuracy determine how effectively that opportunity translates as competition improves.

Mid-level programs are now explicitly telling recruits to develop here, then transfer for bigger NIL. For families hearing that pitch, the right response is due diligence, not a quick yes.

Recruiting can wear him down. Protect the kid inside the prospect.
This is the part nobody posts about.
The season, camps, film sessions, DMs, rankings, questionnaires, and a phone that never really stops. Stack that on top of school, a season, and being seventeen, and you've handed a kid a second job he never applied for. Some athletes genuinely thrive in it. Plenty quietly stop enjoying the thing they were once great at.
The signs are easy to miss because they look like maturity. He gets quieter. He stops bringing it up. He answers the phone like it's a chore. He starts describing football as something he has to do.
Parents are usually the last to notice, because the process is exciting for us in a way it stopped being for him a while ago.
✅ Does he still enjoy playing?
✅ Is he starting to dread the phone?
✅ Is recruiting every dinner conversation?
✅ Who is he when football is quiet?
The goal is a kid who still loves the game. An athlete who burns out at seventeen never finds out how good he was.

When a college football program retains a struggling coach, finances often drive the decision as much as confidence. Here is what families evaluating those programs should understand.

When historically elite programs lose multiple commits in October, boards shift. For 2027 families in active conversations with those programs, that shift has direct implications.

No offers yet isn't no path. It does mean changing the plan.
There's a particular kind of quiet that hits families in October of senior year. The phone that was busy in June has gone still, and the instinct is either to panic or to insist everything's fine.
Neither helps him.
A senior fall without an offer is not the end of his football. It is, however, a signal that the plan needs to change. Usually the target list was built around where the family hoped he'd play rather than where he actually projects. That's a fixable problem, but only if somebody says it out loud.
Rosters fill later than most families think. Staffs lose commitments in December and January. Kids sign in February. Late film moves people, but only if it's in front of the right level of program.
✅ Is the target list realistic about level?
✅ Has his senior film gone out yet?
✅ Are D2, D3 and NAIA on the list?
✅ Is he still improving, or coasting?
Quiet in October isn't a verdict. Rosters fill late, and late film still changes minds.

The SEC adopted a uniform NIL contract on Monday. For families evaluating offers at conference schools, what is standardized and what is still school-specific are two different questions.
