Tuesday night was a bloodbath for Republicans, and a lot of conservatives are still trying to figure out how it got this bad.
Democrats flipped at least seven Senate seats, including Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio and North Carolina. Kansas hasn't sent a Democrat to the Senate in nearly a hundred years. That should tell you how fed up voters were.
There's plenty of blame to go around, but a big chunk of it belongs to Senate Republicans.
For two years they held the majority and acted like they were still in the minority. They had the White House, they had the House, and they still couldn't get the job done.
The filibuster was the excuse every single time. Instead of changing the rules so the majority could actually govern, they hid behind them. Democrats would never extend that courtesy to us, and everyone knows it.
Look at the SAVE America Act. Gallup found 84% of Americans support requiring photo ID to vote, including two thirds of Democrats. That's about as close to a slam dunk as politics gets.
The House passed it. President Trump pushed the Senate to stay in session until it got done. John Thune shrugged and said the votes weren't there.
Whose job is it to find the votes? That's exactly what a Majority Leader is supposed to do.
When you won't fight for something 84% of the country wants, your own voters notice. They stop believing you'll fight for anything, and on Tuesday a lot of them either stayed home or sent a message.
That's dereliction of duty, plain and simple. John Thune had every tool he needed and chose to do nothing with it.
Now he gets to explain why Chuck Schumer is about to run the Senate again. Right now he might be the most hated man in America, and he earned every bit of it.
