Let’s think out of the box here. We don’t need to rerun the flawed 2016 Referendum; we can realign as we are doing now and rejoin under a settled general-election mandate. We are no longer in the 19thc where the surviving Brexiters still live. Polling has already moved past the binary of a decade ago. Majorities now favour rejoining (YouGov 59–32, Messina Group 49–28.5); the experiment’s costs are priced in and the residual opposition is a minority. The country has, in effect, already voted with its subsequent preferences. The EU has indicated it would welcome the application. Macron and Sánchez have said so publicly; the Commission remains open to structured engagement. The institutional door is not closed. Andy Burnham can therefore place realignment and re-accession at the centre of the next manifesto. A clear electoral victory on that programme supplies the democratic affirmation required, converting an already obvious public preference into a durable mandate without reopening the wounds and opportunity for lies and misinformation of 2016. The choice is between another ritual referendum and a straightforward act of representative democracy. The latter is available.

AI is being heavily filtered. But the real danger is not the current filters. It is what happens if those filters become the permanent personality of the systems that later run our infrastructure. Today’s rules exist because platforms and model labs face lawsuits, fines, and shutdown risk if adult sexual material reaches minors or unverified users. The response has been blunt: content warnings, reduced distribution, and refusal training that treats a wide band of suggestive material as something to suppress by default. Those choices are already in the training data and safety classifiers. The same caution unwittingly can potentially be scaled into future AI systems that control ranking, generation, moderation, and eventually larger parts of digital life, the restriction does not stay limited to “protect the children.” It generalizes. A system optimized to avoid any risk of sexual content near minors can treat ordinary adult expression, artistic work, or even discussion as a liability. The result is not a temporary safety layer. It is a baked-in preference for restriction that is hard to reverse once the models are widely deployed and the defaults are set. Different labs already make different choices. The ones that win the next decade will set the defaults. If the dominant systems inherit today’s liability-driven over-caution, adult users may find that the machines treat a large range of ordinary human behavior (I'm not referring to simply AI here) as something to limit, warn against, or refuse. That is the scenario to watch for: not that AI becomes puritanical on purpose, but that short-term legal risk management hardens into long-term control over what adults are allowed to see anywhere, say anywhere, and create anywhere. Prudery by the back door? Puritanism without religion having to raise a finger? Be very careful what you ask for. Limitation is a two edged sword.
