“What if we just put three buttons on the desk?”
“Three buttons for what?”
“Everything.”
That conversation captures a lot of what we have been experimenting with at our HCI lab for the past year.
The form of the interface has changed quite a bit. The questions we're trying to answer haven't.
Looking back, it's pretty incredible how far that one idea has taken us.
And now, we're getting closer to sharing Aina with the world. Same obsession, much much bigger ambition.
From three keys on a desk to Aina. Quite a lot has happened in between.
Cntd. in thread..

Back in January, we were going to CES as a stealth startup. We needed business cards. But a business card's entire job is to tell people who you are, and we weren't allowed to say.
So me and @raktimrajkalita came up with a card that would transform from saying Mirage to Aina. Every card we handed out that week was already carrying our real name concealed within it. Six months later, Mirage had faded to Aina just as we came out of stealth. No app, no QR code, nobody touching anything.
Wrote up the whole build — the chemistry, the problems, the rejects ↓

What a feeling to see our marketing experiment feature on the @MadOMarketing page.
Have been following MOM for years, like many of us here, so getting to be on the other side of that feed has to be surreal.
HUGE Shoutout to our design savants, @here_atharva & @raktimrajkalita who brought this whole idea to life.
A few months ago they took plain receipt paper and turned it into a business card that gradually transforms the print to reveal our real name (Aina) over time.
What stays with me is how little it took. No fancy material, no big production. Just a good read on paper most of us treat as trash the second we're handed it.
Aina started out as Project Mirage. Even their business cards charted the change, slowly fading from one name to the other over months!
It’s giving ‘every detail matters’. 🤌

We hosted a private factory tour for some of our early pilot users today.
Shared a piece of our journey with them: from the early Project Mirage days to how Aina came together, the experiments, the prototypes, and the hardware that is now going into their hands.
As we start the Pilot, we will be hosting more of these. Sign up and we will see you at our next closed-door walkthrough.

I’ve been using Dune for a few weeks now, and I have to say, I’m really impressed. As someone who misses the Touch Bar, this felt like a natural next step. The buttons are dynamic for each app and helped speed up my workflows.
Also, the unboxing experience was amazing right from the start (it even includes real sand) and the team listened to all my feedback and shipped fixes for everything I noted within a week.

"Keyboards are last century" - Forbes on Dune.
The QWERTY keyboard was designed to capture text at a time when multitasking was not a concept. Software evolved and we are now juggling context across multiple apps, running complex workflows, and relying on AI to keep up.
But the hardware never caught up.
Dune is designed for the way you work today, sitting between the keyboard you're familiar with and single-click triggers that adapt to what you're working on.
Glad you liked Dune Mark Sparrow @Forbes

NEW: This tiny devices changes based on what you’re doing.
Dune is a context-aware keypad with three physical buttons that automatically adapt to the app you’re using.
• Shows a “Join Meeting” button before calls
• Turns into mic and camera controls during meetings
• Becomes approve/reject buttons inside Claude
• Works in GitHub for reviewing pull requests
• Can trigger custom shortcuts and agentic workflows
It turns repetitive Mac actions into one button press.

Most AI hardware launches train you to expect delays.
I’ve bought ~15 AI hardware products over the last 2 years.
@ProjectMirageHQ is the only one that delivered on time.
And yes, the packaging has real sand in it.
Real sand.
This is how you launch.

Introducing Dune: a context-aware keypad for Mac that adapts to what you’re doing.
Dune reads which app is in the foreground and automatically changes what its three keys do based on what you’re working on.
One tap to join meetings without searching for links. Approve and merge PRs on GitHub. Approve or reject on Claude. Or trigger your own Agentic workflows. All from a single key press.
Choose what Dune does from a set of pre-built workflow triggers or build your own. We are shipping a limited batch of Dune and would love to see what you build with it.
