The Gecko Project (@geckoproj), OCCRP, and @DeutscheWelle are Society of Publishers in Asia (@sopasia) award finalists in the “Excellence in Reporting on the Environment” category. Their investigation into Harita Group’s Indonesian nickel mines — which supply raw materials for EV giants like Tesla, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz — revealed that the conglomerate’s own monitoring showed it had been polluting local waters for years with chromium-6, the toxic chemical made famous by the "Erin Brockovich" case. Winners will be announced June 18th.

Gold from the mine is sold to Swiss refiner MKS PAMP, which is in the supply chain of Nvidia and Apple.

This aerial image from the 1960s shows that the 'yellow line' of Israel's redeployment in Gaza is roughly matching with the border of the area's coastal sand dune, leaving Gaza without the absolute majority of its agricultural areas on the fertile soils in the east.
