85 years ago Charlie Chaplin made the greatest speech of the century (playing a mock version of Hitler). We'd be wise to heed his words TODAY as they are incredibly appropriate now, just as they were in 1940. Don't bow down to dictators. _Fight_. (©️"The Great Dictator", 1940)

This is a reminder that the Speaker is third in line to the Presidency. Just in case the President and Vice President get suddenly "fired" by the people. 👀

A fascinating watch for the rest of the world:
The biggest loser of election night wasn't Donald Trump, it was the data center industry. Dozens of data center moratoriums and restrictions passed. Just one lost. Six governors who supported data center moratoriums won big. And at least 47 winning Congressional candidates made data centers a core part of their campaign, with 17 flipping from red to blue.

Hey X algorithm, you should've shown me this five days ago
Russia is using disinformation, cyber tactics, and psychological warfare to influence what Americans believe. I wrote about Russia in The Cult of Trump, placing it at the top of Chapter 7, about puppetmasters. I look at the outside forces influencing Trump and American politics. People need to understand that these disinformation campaigns are designed to undermine our checks and balances, disrupt our media ecosystem, and weaken trust in the information we receive. And now AI is making that even easier. We’re seeing fabricated celebrity videos, fake media content, and coordinated campaigns spreading across social media ahead of the midterms. When you see something on platforms like X, don’t automatically believe it because it looks convincing or appears to be popular. Educate yourself, follow trustworthy sources, and double-check what you’re seeing with fact-checking organizations and researchers who track these disinformation campaigns. We need to understand when we are being manipulated, talk about it with others, and stay engaged. VOTE!!!!! Have you seen any of these AI fakes being spread in the lead-up to the midterms? "Russia is great. It's awesome having such a powerful resourceful Neighbour. Becoming evermore dependent on them in all areas, economy, productivity, security, etc. is great unlike what those doomer decels are saying. The fact that Russia has historically shown itself as a deceitful sociopath should be of no concern. Nothing could go wrong." 🤦‍♂️ This is a post about artificial intelligence. #PauseAI #BanSuperintelligence

7 months ago, AOC and I introduced an AI data center moratorium. Last night, 43 of 44 communities voted for one locally. Americans don’t want Big Tech oligarchs wrecking the environment, gutting jobs and threatening humanity’s future. NATIONAL DATA CENTER MORATORIUM NOW

Candidates campaigned on AI and tech accountability. Now they're sharing that message in election night victory speeches. With many races yet to be decided, here's what we're already hearing in key Senate races.

To anyone telling Ukrainians to just capitulate:
❗️Oleshky residents tell @KyivIndependent that local children were taken away to “the pit” by russian forces for secretly studying in online Ukrainian schools. This is happening to all the 1.6 mln children still trapped under russian occupation.

Dr Luiza Jarovsky correct as always. People are ignoring the core issue: it's_unregulated. BigAI is playing with public safety like big tobacco were playing with our lungs.
People should know the real reason why AI cyberattacks are growing (and will likely get worse):

❗️ A Dutch Starlink user says he got a Paramount piracy notice within two days of torrenting a single episode of Dexter: Resurrection. Starlink forwarded it with a warning that further downloads could get his service suspended or terminated and put him at risk of legal action. He says 24 years of torrenting had never brought him a single notice before. In the Netherlands, the Supreme Court ruled in 2021 that a major ISP did not have to hand alleged pirates' details to a film distributor. So the user thought he was safe. Starlink, a US company bound by the DMCA, has said it is obliged to pass such notices on.

Decisions affecting human life, freedom, and the use of force must always remain subject to effective, informed, and responsible human oversight. For this reason, artificial intelligence must be “disarmed”, and I encourage the States meeting in Geneva in November to take concrete steps toward banning lethal autonomous weapons.

So many people seem genuinely astonished by this local ceasefire in Oleshky, where Russian occupation and the fighting have driven the city into a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe. Turns out, all it takes is an order from the Kremlin, and Russians and Ukrainians stop shooting at each other. They can calmly and civilly arrange the evacuation of innocent civilians facing starvation, even allow Ukrainian and American journalists to be present on the ground, and so on. Well, duh. There is not, and never has been, a single adequate, rational, even remotely sane reason to wage a war aimed at destroying Ukraine. This is the stupidest, most brainless, absurd, pointless, contrived, and deceitful war in human history. The Kremlin wanted to give Donald Trump a little gift ahead of the elections, so the Kremlin gave an order to put the bloodbath on hold for a few dozen hours. All it would take is a single order from the Kremlin, and not only would a local ceasefire become possible, but the entire war would end. Just like that. Instantly. And 95% of Russians wouldn't give a single damn. They would happily accept absolutely anything as yet another "great victory of Russian arms," provided that's how state television explained it to them. And with a snap of the fingers, all those insane fairy tales about "NATO expansion," "Nazi Satanists," the "multipolar world," "historical Russian lands," and all the rest of that bullshit would simply vanish into thin air. The problem is that, in this insane, upside-down looking-glass world, absolutely everything is being done to encourage a megalomaniacal maniac, driven mad by impunity and boredom, to never, ever, under any circumstances stop the war, but to keep it going indefinitely. Instead, he is constantly appeased and rewarded for it.

Halloween horror at its best. 🎃
Shh. Do you hear that? Somewhere in Russia, the occupiers are scared of Palyanytsia, a rocket with a name they can’t pronounce. Together with other ghostbusters, Behemoth, Vampire and Flamingo, it will haunt Russia long after Halloween. Donate $24+ to Sky Defense between October 29 and November 4, and you could win a t-shirt with the ghostbuster of your choice. Help drive evil spirits out of Ukraine. u24.gov.ua/news/treat-with-a…

The future of #ArtificialIntelligence is not pre-determined. As a technology developed by human beings, its future depends on the choices we make. We therefore have the responsibility to guide, change and, when necessary, reject its applications. A reliable system that serves the human person is of greater value than one that is exceptionally powerful but whose consequences cannot be adequately foreseen or controlled.

Iconic. “Do you trust the Russians?” Harry Truman was once asked “No. They broke every agreement they ever made with me. That's why I don't trust them,” replied the 33rd President of the United States. 80 years later, nothing has changed…

Interesting thread showing how disinfo campaigns work:
Replying to @RVAwonk
These are some of the tweets from the Starlink disinformation campaign. The tweets themselves came mostly from accounts that appeared to be operated by humans, but there were some signs of inauthentic activity/automation in the retweets. These tweets are copy-paste repetitions of the seed phrases, which blamed Ukraine for bringing this on themselves by "hacking" Starlink terminals.
