Built first business from $0 to 7-figures & exited. | Building a next level franchise as the COO of Laundry Spot and Ohio Franchisee

I’m the COO of Laundry Spot. I’m also a franchisee along with @ADbriggs66 to build out 10 stores in the Cleveland territory. Which means every process I build, I have to execute myself. That changes how I think about things. When I began building the Operations Manual, I was able to put myself in the shoes of a franchisee to determine if the contents would be helpful. Or when I write a site selection playbook and then go tour 10 spaces myself, I quickly reveal which parts were useful and which parts were just words on a page. It’s the shortest feedback loop I’ve ever had in an Ops role. Which I think is a super power. Also, humbling at times. But I’d rather find the gaps myself than wait for a franchisee to tell me about them weeks or months after the fact. Best way I know to support our franchisees is to do the job alongside them.

In the last week I have become a complete Claude Code addict. It's wild what I'm able to build with zero coding experience and the desire to learn. I've done my best to create some checks and balances and overall structure in the repo but I have no clue what I'm looking at if I had to audit something. Any vibe coding advice is welcome. I will likely be back to see if anybody can help audit the code, security, permissions, etc. before we go live. For now, it feels like I'm cheating.

Be honest. At what age were you able to afford your first bacon egg and cheese? Keep grinding.

Interesting read. It's why I'm so bullish on the opportunity to provide customers a more dignified laundromat experience. -> Laundry is a necessity, thus demand will be more resilient than most industries -> Many existing laundromats are an awful customer experience -> For those w capital, there's a huge opportunity to better serve these customers: attended stores that are friendly/clean/bright/safe, modern equipment which enables cleaner clothes and faster cycles, new tech to drive convenience and value. All at the same price. Tons of capital & tech will be flowing to laundromats over the next decade+.
Dinner with an exec/friend at a large national property management company tonight. This person oversees ~150k apartments; access to an insane amount of data. Current multifamily market in most of the country is worse than S&L, .com bust, or the GFC. Worst they’ve seen. Class A mostly fine, decent rent growth. However: - credit scores at class A have gone down meaningfully over the past 3 years. - more people are paying rent via credit card. - average bank account balance noticeably lower than even 2 years ago - class A tenants stretched thin, living beyond their means. 20k comes in, 20k goes out every month. - starting to see these renters move down a tier Class B: - simply too many apartments, we built too much new stuff. Ripple effect is enormous. - fewer renters tomorrow than today. Same store foot traffic noticeably down year over year. Some markets down 40-50% - considering dropping rents below $700 a month on some 1beds in major southern markets. Class C: - looking at degrading NOI. Rents aren’t growing for a long time, but expenses keep creeping up - more renters are one missed paycheck away from disaster than they can remember seeing in decades - tenants aren’t paying rent because they simply don’t have it - wage growth has not kept up Lenders: - some major investment funds, household names, haven’t paid their mortgages in 2-3 years. Banks won’t foreclose because “X is a big client.” Mexican standoff. - a roof leak gets ignored, becomes water damage, then mold, then a down building. Buildings are rapidly deteriorating as some owners choose cash preservation over funding losses. - number of pre-foreclosure and REO deals is the highest as a % of total units they can recall. - data providers know it’s bad, but they’re paid to sell optimism to owners/lenders. So every forecast is “it will probably get a little better next year maybe” and that gets regurgitated at investment committees all over. I asked “how do you think this ends?” “Not sure. My gut says slowly then suddenly, and things will get really bad. Been doing this 40 years, you can feel it in the air. But, there’s a chance it’s just a decade of tolerable pain. I’m praying for that.”

I feel like I’m going to be cheating on Grok Bot
We’re opening a research preview of Claude Duet, a new app where Claude works as a proactive agent. It comes to you with what needs your attention, completes tasks you ask of it, keeps working when you step away, and checks with you before it acts on your behalf.

SendCutSend continues to be one of the most exciting journeys to follow. The growth they are driving in manufacturing is nothing short of legendary. Can’t help but want to support them anyway possible. I will figure out a way to become a repeat customer.
Okay it’s happening: - Added 160k square feet in Reno for our automated high volume lines and parts up to 5’x10’. Operational now. - Added 170k square feet in Pittston PA for 1-day shipping (or faster) to the Northeast US. Landing machines and growing the team now. - Southeast US is next (flying out next week to negotiate a lease). 3 more leases in 3 more states to sign after that. Expect massive lead time reductions across our factory network. - Finalizing our first acquisition and working on the second and third. These are services you’ve been asking for. More coming. We’ll be able to say yes to more of your BOM. - Welding is ramping nicely. More assembly support soon. - More materials and capabilities for CNC machining in development now, including much smarter pricing. Increased capacity will also help us cut lead time drastically. - Added 450 people so far this year. Hopefully double that in 2027. - Candy and merch budgets have been tripled. …And we’re just getting started. That’s a big part of why we raised again: to build more, ship faster, and make manufacturing easier and more accessible. I’m doing my best for ya. I love you guys. Big thanks to @willreed at @sparkcapital , @caitlinbolnick1 at @CRV, @marksugarman at MHS, @andrew__reed at @sequoia and @matthuang at @paradigm for supporting our Series B (and the extra rocket fuel) LFG!!!!! 🇺🇸

Community Notes has a real chance to kill freedom of speech (or at least freedom of reach 😂). Mostly angry people report things, and often just because they don’t like something said. Like this case. Alex’s post is not rage bait, or a carbon copy of the sources in community notes. It’s an opinion. Not saying everyone should agree with his take, but it’s ridiculous it got noted. I had a post doing millions of views based on pure fact (price of a movie ticket) get community noted and killed momentum to a halt… just because someone wanted to believe I photoshopped a receipt (I did not). Love the concept of Notes by the way, but wish there was an easy way to avoid these scenarios. @elonmusk

Imagine getting this offended about ANYTHING a random guy has to say on the internet. Nothing screams “I’m incredibly insecure” more than letting someone you don’t know trigger you so badly you have to battle it out in the comments. Truly shocking.

I’m ready
The year is 2050. The Great Lakes Megalopolis is the most valuable region on Earth. Minneapolis – Milwaukee – Chicago – Indianapolis – Cincinnati – Detroit – Columbus – Cleveland – Pittsburgh – Toronto – Buffalo – Montreal • 20% of the world's surface fresh water • Urban centers with finance & tech hubs, and great universities • Ontario runs one of the largest nuclear fleets in the world, generating up to 60% of its electricity, with grid-scale SMRs being built ahead of schedule. Illinois leads the US in nuclear power, and Michigan is bringing reactors back online. • The region holds some of the largest untapped copper-nickel-cobalt-platinum-chromite deposits in the world, along with the gallium, indium, and graphite that China guards so jealously. • The densest industrial base in the Western Hemisphere: heavy machinery, metal refineries, steel, auto, batteries, and aerospace backed by a deep pool of suppliers/engineers/skilled trades. • Climate-resilient cities with municipal capacity that can absorb millions more.

This SMB post couldn’t get anymore SMB-er.
If you sell your house, drain your 401k, put it all into starting a manufacturing company, sign 15 PGs, work 100+ hours a week, get sued, get gray hair, and wake up at 4am every morning, they send you this cool plaque.

Counter Point: If you want a home gym, custom kitchen, garage storage, basement kid’s play room, wood shop, your own garden, new built-ins, renovate your bathroom, build a new patio, or modify anything at all… Then you may think owning a home is cool.
Unpopular opinion: Owning a home is no longer cool Renting is a better status symbol imo

Turns out laundromats aren’t passive and require great operations and risk management like any business that earns a profit. Who knew.
It's amusing watching the MSM try and keep up with the conversation on Main Street.

Buy a 3D printer. Gifts on demand.
We need to collectively agree: No gifts for kids bday parties (like your kids friends bday party). Call me a Scrooge! But we all just have to buy the same junk each weekend and no one actually wants it.

I have some sort of mental disorder. I can’t sit still and always need a project but I’m also lazy and don’t want to work any harder than I have to. So I relentlessly search for the best tool for the job every single time. I enjoy building stuff, making repairs, and maintaining the house/yard. However, working in the yard is my least favorite. So after a few years of spending a full day blowing leaves in the fall, I went out and bought the most powerful leaf blower I could find. Today, I had to cut back our 60+ hostas and it used to take half a day between my wife and I with shears. So I picked up this cordless trimmer today and it took 15 minutes to trim everything. I have a full blown tool addiction, I’m aware. I can’t remember the last time I started a project without buying a new tool first. I think the only reason I like to work is to justify new tools. I suppose the first step is admitting you have a problem.
