The economics behind AAA layoffs:
AAA originally meant the highest credit rating: low risk of default.
In games, the term should mean a proven, relatively low-risk investment with strong returns. FIFA, Madden and CoD fit that model.
A $400M budget doesn't make a game AAA

I hope you all support the absolute beejeebus out of @stagetourgame. I hope that support opens them to be a broader and more inclusive (not just rock) music game.
In the meantime, I look forward to the absolute mountain of music content that will come with GTA VI Online.

BioWare has always inspired us, and it's hard to say goodbye to our idols. Thank you for everything, @BioWare. Many of us wouldn’t be in the games industry without your legacy.

from what i’ve seen the last ten years it’s way simpler than that. when you only needed to make a moderate amount over cost it was okay to sell a moderate amount. now capitalists are involved, consolidation happened, more layers of middle management, everything costs way more and game price hasn’t scaled with inflation. a $10m gamble is acceptable, 10 titles, it’s ok if one or two fail, one will pay for them all. this doesn’t work when $100m is cheap
del’s “the death of the middle” have a better explanation of the effect.

The first game a game studio makes is usually the most time-consuming, and game a studio ever makes. But it could also be the investment that makes the next 3 games possible at a fraction of the development effort. That shit can't happen if you layoff your team after a launch.

And just so you know it cuts both ways... Another music artist. Another trailer with absolutely no nod to the fact the game has a music mode.
