What’s completely unfair is that 1 in 3 unpaid carers provide 100+ hrs of care a week for £86.45 in Carer’s Allowance
Replacing those hours with agency carers at £22 p/hr would cost £2,200 a week
Yet MPs celebrate making it easier to work a second job
Why not value the first?

🔴@Helen_Whately, Shadow Secretary of State for Work & Pensions, has claimed £2 MILLION expenses in 10 years.
£300,000 relates to her own travel and accommodation - yet she only lives 50 miles from London.
Her boss, @KemiBadenoch has 3 children, claims £2.7K per month to rent a 6 bed farmhouse & tried to claim expenses for a family holiday.
The country can't afford these @Conservatives.

Telling an exhausted family carer to "take care of yourself" means very little if nobody is willing to take something off their plate.

🥶 When you’re reading these money-saving tips on how to stay warm this winter, remember this:
British Gas made £281 MILLION in profit so far this year.
Working people are being told to put on another jumper while energy giants rake in millions.

Receiving disability benefits at 7 isn’t being told what you cannot achieve. They help meet additional care & mobility needs, not define potential
Scope estimates extra disability costs at £1,095 a MONTH. Calling vital support for “cash handouts” is beyond offensive.
More 7 year olds are on disability benefits than 50 year olds.
From primary school, they're getting defined by their diagnosis and told what they can't do.
@Conservatives will stop £ thousands in cash handouts for mild conditions and give support instead.

“Fewer people standing on their own two feet.”
An extraordinary choice of words when many disabled people receiving benefits literally cannot stand on their own two feet.

… @Helen_Whately says we “can’t afford to sign off 25% of the population.”
Meanwhile disabled people can’t buy accessible tickets for @WeAreInvictus @Birmingham2027 without Nimbus verification.
Before lecturing disabled people about work, perhaps build a world they can access.

Helen Whately & Kemi Badenoch are both millionaires. They claim the most.
Incl £74.6k in rent paid for by us. Their bills, council tax, travel expenses, subsidised food & drink.
But the Conservatives want you to believe disabled people on an average of £15k a year are the issue

Helen Whatley MP spends every day bashing disabled people online and calling them scroungers.
She has claimed for almost £2,000,000 on expenses since 2015.
£300,000 of this are for her own travel and accommodation etc, yet she lives 50 miles from London.

A Mandate for Change
For too many care leavers, turning 18 means having the rug pulled from under them. The care, nurturing and security disappear, replaced by rent, bills and a fight to survive.
After years of trauma, some are forced to choose between full-time education and keeping a roof over their heads, without family to fall back on.
PAs and youth workers can only do so much. They don’t have all the solutions, and they cannot carry a failing system alone.
Support and care are two different things. Two hours a month cannot replace someone being there.
Too many care leavers are still living in survival mode. In 28 years, that reality hasn’t changed.
Corporate parenting cannot end when childhood does.
But this is the reality for many across the UK in our so called CARE system.

A 17-year-old care-experienced young man is being forced to move twice within months.
Why? Because the local authority says he must be living independently by 18.
He’s starting dance school at the same time. He is begging to stay where he is until he has some stability and can settle into his education.
The answer? No.
No consideration of his circumstances. No understanding of the impact of yet another move. Just a decision made about his life.
We talk about stability, trauma-informed care and corporate parenting.
But where is the stability?
You cannot build a future for a young person while constantly moving the foundations beneath their feet.
A move now because of staff complications. Another in January because he turns 18 and must live independently.
Two moves. College. Adulthood. One 17-year-old.
This is why care experience must be a protected characteristic.

Disabled people are routinely having to use PIP to cover the shortfall in rent because private rentals are not fully covered by the Housing Element of UC because they're set at social housing rates which are considerably lower.
Disabled people routinely have to pay for health & social care because of cuts.
Excellent blog from @TrussellUK 's @LucyJLBannister: What's missing from debates about disability benefits & PIP? Failures in Universal Credit mean PIP is now a crucial part of poverty prevention as well as enabling disabled people to participate in society more broadly. 1/4
