Fuck it. I'll say it. A population that doesn’t know how to regulate its emotions is easier to provoke, manipulate, divide, and exploit. Anger becomes an opening for outrage. Fear becomes an opening for panic. The need for validation becomes an opening for approval from people who don’t have your best interests at heart. When you cannot tolerate disagreement, somebody can convince you that anyone who thinks differently is your enemy. That’s why I believe emotional education should be a fundamental part of growing up. Children need to practice identifying their feelings, communicating their needs, handling rejection, resolving conflict, recognizing manipulation, setting boundaries, and taking accountability. Telling a child to “sit down, shut up, and stop crying” teaches them to hide what they feel. It gives them no tools for understanding it. We spend years preparing children for exams. We should also prepare them for the uncomfortable conversations, disappointments, losses, and relationships they’ll encounter throughout their lives. Academic achievement doesn’t automatically teach you how to apologize, accept criticism, or hear “no” without treating it as an attack. Emotional maturity doesn’t mean you never feel angry, jealous, insecure, or afraid. It means taking responsibility for what you do next. You can be hurt and refuse to hurt somebody else. You can disagree without dehumanizing someone. You can acknowledge that your childhood shaped your behavior while accepting that changing it is now your responsibility. And that responsibility extends beyond our personal relationships. When a headline, advertisement, or public figure provokes you, can you pause long enough to ask why? What are they asking you to believe, buy, share, or do? Who benefits if you react before you think? Emotional awareness gives you room to make that decision for yourself. It won’t solve every injustice or prevent every conflict. People also need safety, resources, and institutions they can trust. But teaching people to understand their emotions gives them something they can use at home, at work, online, and in the moments when their choices affect somebody else. Breaking a generational cycle begins when somebody recognizes a familiar reaction and chooses to handle it differently. When a parent apologizes. When someone respects a boundary despite feeling rejected. When anger becomes a conversation instead of a threat. We cannot keep telling people to “do better” without teaching them how. Give children those tools early and give adults the opportunity to learn them, too.
