Let’s do a little refresher on the who’s-who-and-what’s-what of Westville Correctional Facility and the 13 months that Richard Allen spent in solitary confinement as a pretrial defendant.
Who’s who?

Attorney @aburkhartlaw , Bob Motta @defense_diaries and @LawyerLeeW attended the trial and have great coverage.
I have a little YT channel to help get information out in short form and for those that don’t want to read thousands of pages of transcripts! This is just a general video, I’ll add a few about the cartridge too.

Rick's strongest lever was his wife.
Before his arrest, Richard Allen's emotional and psychological stability primarily rested on one person: his wife of over 30 years, Kathy Allen. As his treating psychologist, Wala identified this from the start. In November 2022, she noted that Rick was "extremely selfless when it comes to his wife" and under oath agreed that Rick's "chivalrous attitude had always been there" during his solitary confinement.
Over the following months, Wala would trace a man who was falling apart around his wife's absence. In January 2023, Wala documented a "nervous breakdown” and later testified that not getting a letter from his wife “would probably be a big thing." In February 2023, Wala wrote that Rick was "breaking down" on every call with Kathy. In March 2023, Wala recorded Rick's depression and withdrawal in her clinical notes and would later recall - under oath and without prompting - that "it was about wanting his wife to be able to visit".

Teaching Rick to distrust his own mind.
On March 16, 2023, according to her own note, treating psychologist Monica Wala told Rick there were "no records of routine communication between Mr. Allen and his wife." Confused and agitated, Rick insisted he spoke to Kathy once or twice a week. Hours of call recordings and more than 500 pages of call transcripts support his account. Days later, another mental health worker told Rick that “an investigator” had made the same claim: that Rick "hadn't been talking to his wife" so “why would visits matter" to him?
For whatever reason, a lead investigator and two mental health professionals told a man already losing his grip on reality that there was no record of his regular contact with his wife. The memory-distrust model warns against this very pattern: the claim came from authority, contradicted Rick’s own experience, and reached him at a moment of extreme emotional intensity. That combination can lead a person to doubt his own memory and instead rely on what he is told (Gudjonsson, Cortex, 2017).
Trust in authority can deepen that vulnerability, as the person comes to accept the authority’s version of events over his own (Mogavero, Behavioral Sciences and the Law, 2020).

The .40cal cartridge had been cycled 3 times. Meaning someone put that round in the gun and ejected it 3 different times...why?! xitter.gq/divinejlet/status/2087…

If its true that the bullet/cartridge was ejected 3 times - it was done by law enforcement
“Rick Allen was actually treated BETTER than any other inmate at Westville”

Disappeared for 13 days.
On October 26, 2022, Richard Allen is interrogated and arrested.
On October 28, 2022, he is formally charged. He is now an accused criminal defendant. His due process and 6th Amendment rights attach.
For the next 13 days, Rick is moved more than 250 miles through four separate facilities. He is held without counsel and is allowed no contact with his family or the outside world.
On October 31, 2022, precisely the day that Doug Carter and a dozen ISP, Carroll County and U.S. Marshall representatives stand on a national stage and announce the arrest of Richard Allen as the Delphi killer, Rick does the one thing available to him: he sends a handwritten letter directly to the court and begs for a lawyer.
That letter is rerouted and delayed; a mail stop is imposed sometime between the White County jail and the Indianapolis mail processing center. Rick remains totally isolated and unrepresented.
On November 8, 2022, Rick is finally able to call his wife, Kathy. She asks him if they have “given him a lawyer yet”, and tells her they have not. Before their call is cut off, Rick tells Kathy where he is being held: Westville Correctional Facility. He gives Kathy his IDOC inmate number. He tells her he does not know when he will be able to contact her again. He tells her he loves her. The call ends.
On November 9, 2022, sometime before 9AM, investigators Holeman, Mullin and Liggett arrive at Westville for another “interview” with Rick. He is still being held without counsel.
On November 9, 2022, after Rick refuses to speak with Holeman without an attorney, Rick’s written request for counsel finally reaches the Carroll County court. It appears on the public case docket that afternoon.
Indiana jail standards treat correspondence with courts and attorneys as privileged mail requiring prompt transmission, without interference. Indiana also guarantees inmates confidential access to counsel and the courts.
Four years post-arrest and two years post-trial, critical questions remain unanswered:
Who controlled Rick’s letter during those 12 days? Why was it rerouted? Who ordered the mail stop, and did they knowingly intercept or delay an unrepresented defendant’s request to the courts for counsel?
Did investigators Holeman, Mullin and Liggett use the resulting 13-day-window, knowing full-well that Rick was still isolated and legally unrepresented, to apply more pressure and pursue another interrogation?
While Rick was desperately trying to communicate with the outside world and obtain legal representation, throwing himself “at the mercy of the court”, the State was actively isolating and relocating him.
While they interfered with Rick’s access to counsel and the courts, investigators continued working their case against him.
This interference was not an isolated event or oversight — it would become a pattern of tactics and behaviors that the State, including Prosecutor Mcleland and Judge Frances Gull herself, would employ against Rick and his lawyers.
Again, and again, and again.

spent a while writing/revising and going back and forth with @TrueCrimeAudit and like 4 different AI models trying to articulate this very specific phenomenon in the State's case against Richard Allen where: something untrue/half-true gets repeated ad nauseam relentlessly for months and years until it is eventually just wholly accepted as truth/fact, even when it flies directly in conflict with and contradictory to facts and observable evidence... still haven't landed on an explanation or description that feels quite right, but here are some of the new terms i've learned in the process. 🫠🙃

The man who woke up.
When Rick’s psychosis finally lifted, the incriminating statements stopped: "I lost that three or four months where I don't remember any of it," he said in October.
A week earlier, Rick had asked Kathy: "How can you tell the truth when you don't even know the truth?"
Rick's case rests on everything happening in his world at once: lifelong depression, months of isolation, days without sleep, constant accusation through the door, and a mind that had stopped trusting itself and was coming apart.

Rick's own words.
On March 12, 2023, Richard Allen gave his wife Kathy an instruction from inside his solitary cell at Westville Correctional Facility:
"I worry that they're going to take me and drug me or torture me and try to get a false confession out of me," he told Kathy. "If they ever try to say that I confessed, you need to ask to see the video and the audio."
Three weeks later, sleepless and disoriented, Rick would tell Kathy he had killed two girls; and the State would build its entire case around those very words. Played in order, however, the recorded calls tell a completely different story.
The man who walked in.
When Rick arrived at Westville in November 2022, he was 50 years old. He had been married to Kathy since 1991, had no criminal record and no history of violence. He did, however, carry a long psychiatric history: major depression and generalized anxiety since childhood, and a 2019 hospitalization for suicidal thinking.
Rick’s own treating psychologist, Dr. Monica Wala, testified under oath that the State put him in the most restrictive placement the facility had: solitary confinement within Westville’s Restrictive Housing Unit (the SHU).
Rick’s cell was about 8½ by 12½ feet, his mattress lay on a steel plate inches off the ground, an in-cell camera ran around the clock; the lights never fully turned off, and men screamed "kill yourself" and other abuses at him nearly 24/7.

Honor bound.
On February 16, 2017, forty-eight hours after the bodies of Abby and Libby were found on a local man’s property, then-prosecutor Robert Ives issued a public statement regarding the FBI-led search of another local resident’s home:
“No one at the home searched is suspected of committing any crime.”
Ives issued that statement clearing the residents of Bicycle Bridge Road before the search had even concluded.
The problem with the Delphi investigation from the beginning may not have been as simple as “FBI vs. ISP/CCSD” or a jurisdictional tug-of-war; but Bicycle Bridge Road may have been the beginning of the rupture -- and what would eventually become total local insulation.
So, can an investigation conducted entirely within the same local network it is meant to scrutinize actually follow the evidence wherever it leads -- without local relationships, reputations, and loyalties trumping the truth?
