A thought-provoking new editorial challenges researchers to look beyond familiar approaches and consider new possibilities: longitudinal research, large-scale studies, interdisciplinary approaches, and more creative and innovative methodologies. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…

Probably not, Sounds logical but context and culture can't be borrowed. If it was easy as copying strategies most systems would have done that ages ago. Like ' ripe fruit' strategies and policy rarely travel well and are unlikely to work out of context @HargreavesBC

New 'strategies' won't help. Resources for the front line for pupils & their teachers/leaders/ support staff, & fewer initiatives/projects/platitudes/policy shifts that make 0 difference to learners. Time to put Learners in Wales First. It is that simple @CIRLE_CMet @WG_Education

A lot of politicians seem to have one of two responses to disappointing test results:
1) say the tests don't measure anything important so they can be ignored
2) use them as pretexts for introducing their pet policies.
I'm not sure which I despise more.

The latest PISA results for Wales have created a lot of debate. But the issue we are facing is much more fundamental, and frankly, it upsets me that some politicians still don’t seem to understand what is actually going on.
We keep looking for someone to blame. Blaming each other will not solve the problem. We need to look at ourselves and address the root causes.
If around one in three children in Wales are living in poverty, we cannot simply expect every child to achieve excellent educational outcomes without addressing the circumstances they grow up in.
Education doesn’t start at the school gate. It starts at home. It starts in the early years, with family support, nutrition, stability, parental engagement and a child’s environment.
This isn’t simply about putting more money into education. Funding matters, but money alone will not fix a fundamental problem. We need leadership, accountability and a long-term approach that supports children from the very beginning.

The reporting from @RhysWilliamsTV on the Welsh education system is exemplary. Really detailed and forensic. A must follow!
(Also he has a pic of Barry John playing for the Lions on his profile!)
If you’re interested in how Wales’ education system got to these disastrous results I’ve tried to provide some history and context here.

Heddiw, mae ein system addysg yn destun penawdau gwasg am yr holl resymau anghywir.
Nid cyfrifoldeb Plaid Cymru yw amddiffyn y canlyniadau PISA, ond dyma’n hysbrydoliaeth i osod cyfeiriad newydd ar gyfer codi safonau mewn ysgolion.
Yr wythnos nesaf, byddwn yn lansio ein Cynllun Llythrennedd a Rhifedd Sylfaenol, gan amlinellu strategaeth hirdymor ar gyfer gwella llythrennedd a rhifedd.
Bydd y cynllun yn nodi uchelgais genedlaethol a set o dargedau cenedlaethol. Bydd yn amlygu sut y dylai ysgolion ddatblygu targedau llythrennedd a rhifedd ochr yn ochr â thargedau unigol ar gyfer dysgwyr.
Nid yw Plaid Cymru ofn gosod targedau – maent yn ysgogi uchelgais ac yn sicrhau atebolrwydd; ac er na allwn wrthdroi 27 mlynedd o ddirywiad dros nos, trwy ganolbwyntio ar gael y sylfaeni cywir, yna fe allwn roi Cymru ar y trywydd cywir.
Mae llywodraethau a pholisïau olynol wedi methu ein plant a phobl ifanc. Rwy’n addo wneud popeth yn fy ngallu er mwyn eu helpu i ddod o hyd i'w pwrpas ac er mwyn cyflawni eu potensial, beth bynnag fo'u hamgylchiadau. Mae'r gwaith hwnnw eisoes wedi dechrau.

Maybe at the moment we should all (me included) take a break from any discussion of Cambridge's policies, and reflect on the tragic human costs -- and remember with compassion the person who paid a dreadful price.
