Top 10 Drug & Alcohol Testing Myths – Busted!
Myth #3: Hand sanitiser or household cleaners can trigger a positive SCRAM CAM® result.
Not quite.
While alcohol-containing products have the potential to trigger an initial alert, this isn’t the same as a confirmed positive result for alcohol consumption.
The latest blog in our myth busting series explains how we can tell the difference.

When a parent or carer needs to evidence that they’ve stopped drinking, the right test depends on whether you need to look back, look forward, or both.
At AlphaBiolabs, we offer a range of tests to ensure there is always one suitable for your particular case …

Combining tests
Hair or nail testing establishes past abstinence over several months for up to 12 months, while PEth blood testing covers the most recent month. SCRAM CAM® monitoring or repeat PEth blood testing can then show that abstinence is being maintained.
All alcohol consumption analysis is carried out in-house at our UKAS ISO 17025-accredited laboratory (No. 2773), with UK-wide collections within 24-48 hours, and all pricing within Legal Aid Agency rates.

Some parents or caregivers involved in family proceedings may be doing Sober October. That's definitely a positive. But simply saying you've cut down on alcohol isn't enough for family law proceedings.
In the UK:
🔹There were 9,809 UK alcohol-specific deaths in 2024, well above pre-pandemic levels
🔹 More than 1 million alcohol-related hospital admissions were recorded in England in 2023/24 - the highest on record
🔹 Admission rates were up to twice as high in the most deprived areas
We test the widest variety of sample types for alcohol including hair, nails, and blood, at our UKAS-accredited UK lab, with SCRAM CAM®, breath testing, and repeat PEth testing available for ongoing monitoring.
Contact our expert team on 0333 600 1300 / [email protected] for a quote within the hour.

We’re pleased to share that AlphaBiolabs is sponsoring The Family Law Bar Association National Conference on 17 October.
Held in Brighton this year, the conference brings together specialist family law barristers and judges from across the country for professional development, knowledge sharing, and discussion around the latest developments in family law.
Every delegate will receive a tote bag with all their materials for the day, which includes our two free drug & alcohol testing reference guides, plus some goodies.
Our reference guides simplify the science behind drug & alcohol testing, helping family law barristers understand the different types of tests available, as well as the main drug groups, their legal classifications, legitimate medical applications, and symptoms of misuse.
Look out for them in your delegate tote bag at the conference!
