Last night, former law enforcement officials filed an amicus brief in support of defendants’ request to dismiss a Justice Department lawsuit challenging Boston’s Trust Act. The Trust Act outlines how Boston’s local law enforcement engages in civil immigration-related enforcement and interacts with federal immigration authorities. brennancenter.org/media/1475…

“If you are looking for a lever to reduce crime nationally, bail reform is not a lever I would pull,” @AmesCG told @washingtonpost after President Trump signed executive orders aimed at ending cashless bail. Brennan Center research shows that bail reform has no statistically significant relationship with crime rates. washingtonpost.com/politics/…
The Trump Administration thinks bail reform is a threat to public safety and wants to force states to abandon laws that make our justice system fairer and more effective. As coauthor of one of the only national study of bail reform and crime, here's why he's wrong.
Breaking news: President Trump signed executive orders aimed at ending cashless bail across the country and pushing courts to reconsider the legality of burning the American flag. wapo.st/45YxbLA
What's the data say? There is no relationship between bail reform & crime. We used data from 33 states and examined their laws in detail. My colleague Dr. Terry-Ann Craigie then carefully studied whether crime rates changed after reforms were implemented. brennancenter.org/our-work/r…
States have taken different approaches to changing laws around cash bail, often with bipartisan support. Not so long ago a group of Republican and Democratic senators proposed using the federal government to *help* states who wanted to pass bail reform. nytimes.com/2017/07/20/opini…

In the Trump Administration's first week, it tried to freeze trillions in federal grants. Per @BrookingsInst, Native American communities could lose $24B if that policy went into full effect, breaking the govt's longstanding commitment to Tribal well-being. brookings.edu/articles/a-fed…

"The fact that this brief is backed by organizations as ideologically diverse as Cato and the Brennan Center is a testament to the egregious nature of Trump's invocation of the [Alien Enemies Act]" — @ilyasomin.

Recently @TheEconomist highlighted how funding cuts, agency firings, and political meddling amount to an "assault on American science." They're also an attack on the rule of law and turn on extreme ideas of executive power rejected by the courts. economist.com/leaders/2025/0…
For nearly a century government funding has helped supercharge American science. Reckless and likely unconstitutional cuts to funding and staff now threaten that relationship. magazine.hms.harvard.edu/art…
It's just one way the current administration is reaching far beyond the bounds of executive power to upend American life. Read more on lawsuits seeking to rein in these excesses, by Lauren Miller Karalunas & Sam Breidbart:  brennancenter.org/our-work/a…
This morning @POTUS granted clemency to nearly 1,500 people, including many placed on home confinement during the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is great news and we hope for more grants of clemency before January 20. Read the @BrennanCenter's statement:

"Where was Gondor when the Westfold fell?" Turns out, orbiting Saturn.
Did you know Mt. Doom is literally a real place? By convention, mountains and hills on Saturn's planet-sized moon Titan are named for places and characters in Tolkien's Middle-earth.
Happy #InternationalMountainDay!
The federal death penalty is unevenly applied, not humane, and lacks procedural safeguards. Timely, important work by my @BrennanCenter colleagues @RNidiry and Jessie Brenner: brennancenter.org/our-work/a…
