For decades, communities in the Niger Delta have said their water, land and livelihoods were destroyed by oil pollution. Shell’s own internal documents now back up many of those claims.
See the new report "Nigeria: Lifting the lid" for the full story.

Following yesterday's breaking news that the UK government plans to introduce new mandatory human rights due diligence legislation, please see the joint statement from @CorpJusticeUK in which Naomi McAuliffe of @amnestyUK is quoted.

Ahead of #COP31 the Directors of Amnesty Australia, Brazil and Türkiye explain why the UN summit in Antalya can only deliver meaningful action if governments protect civic freedoms, curb fossil fuel influence and listen to communities on the climate frontline.
See here👇
COP31 must amplify people power, not oil lobby voices. ✊🌍
In a new @ClimateHome op-ed, @juremawerneck, @ruhat_sena_ and @Sam_Klintworth argue that climate talks must be driven by communities on the frontlines, not fossil fuel interests. Read it here:

A group of Civil society organizations, including @amnesty have raised concern over the growing number of harmful exports of surveillance technologies from EU countries to destinations where they may be used to violate rights.

The latest assessment from @UNEP is a stark reminder that the climate crisis is not a future threat. It is unfolding now, and the world is failing to respond at the scale and speed required. We are hurtling past the 1.5°C threshold while states, particularly those most responsible for driving the crisis, continue to fall dangerously short of the action needed to limit the overshoot, shorten its duration, and rapidly bring temperatures back down.
Across the world, communities are already paying the price. Lives, homes and livelihoods are being torn apart by devastating floods, deadly heatwaves, prolonged droughts, rising seas and melting glaciers. Every fraction of a degree of additional warming means more lives at risk, more displacement, deeper inequality and greater harm to human rights. Delay is not neutral. Every year of inaction locks in more suffering for people and communities who have done the least to cause this crisis.
Please take action on behalf of the residents of Bille, Nigeria following unexplained methane leaks and a gas explosion in the town.

When people take to the streets to demand accountability, affordable living conditions and an end to corruption, the answer cannot be repression. @Amnesty’s new report on #Kenya documents how authorities used arrests, abductions, surveillance and restrictions on media freedoms to respond to protests between 2023 and 2025.
These findings should serve as a warning far beyond Kenya: economic grievances must be addressed through rights-based solutions, not authoritarian practices amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2…
See the @Amnesty statement in response to President Trump's sanctions on the ICC following Navi Pillay's Nobel Peace Prize award.
amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2…
Today, the Nobel Peace Prize honored Navi Pillay's extraordinary legacy: the belief that no one is above the law and that victims deserve truth, justice and reparations.
Just hours later, the @POTUS administration sanctioned the International Criminal Court itself in an attempt to undermine that very principle.
The answer must be resistance, solidarity and a determined defence of international justice. States cannot remain silent. They must act now to protect the @IntlCrimCourt, resist efforts to obstruct its work, and reaffirm that no one is above the law.

The serious injury of a 15yo student in Lens is a shocking reminder of what happens when weapons designed to shock, disorient and cause panic are deployed against people exercising their right to protest.
Children and young people taking to the streets to demand their rights should never face stun grenades. Protests are not battlefields.
These dangerous weapons can cause permanent hearing loss and life-changing injuries. They have no place in the policing of protests.
France must permanently ban all stun grenades from protests and protect, not punish, the right to peaceful assembly. amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2…

Today, when the organised far-right are once again on the rise throughout Europe and racial violence in the UK is escalating, we remember this: together, we can beat fascism.

What is happening to student protesters in #France should alarm us all.
Children and young people are taking to the streets to demand something fundamental: their right to education. Yet protests have been met with unnecessary and disproportionate police force, including tear gas and rubber bullets. More than 5,000 people have been arrested and the Interior Ministry says 85% of them are children.
Children exercising their rights must be protected, not criminalized.
As demonstrations continue to take place across the country, French authorities have a clear responsibility: de-escalate, refrain from unlawful use of force, and protect peaceful protest.

#PreCOP31 must turn years of rhetoric into concrete commitments and action that deliver the climate ambition the world needs at #COP31 in November.
Pacific communities cannot carry the burden of global climate leadership alone.

Australia cannot credibly claim climate leadership while continuing to support fossil fuel expansion that deepens the harms facing Pacific communities. Read more on @amnesty's asks at #PreCOP31 : amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2…

Our new @Amnesty investigation exposes how Moroccan authorities built a vast surveillance machine to track, intimidate, blackmail and silence journalists, human rights defenders and other critical voices. From Pegasus spyware and intercepted communications to secret recordings inside homes, cars and detention facilities, surveillance has become part of a wider system of repression.
And this machinery of repression does not exist in isolation. Companies based in Israel, the EU and the USA have supplied the technologies that make it possible, exposing a global economy of techno-oppression in which surveillance tools are sold to governments and turned against those who dare to speak out.
This must end. Morocco must immediately stop the unlawful surveillance of journalists and human rights defenders and ensure independent investigations and accountability. States must stop exporting spyware and other invasive surveillance technologies to Morocco until effective human rights safeguards are in place.
Read our new investigation.

Artificial intelligence has dominated the news cycle this week, raising questions about how we govern these powerful tools. @Amnesty is calling for an international regulatory framework that is not controlled by just a few powerful states and companies.
We, instead need a human rights based, international and multistakeholder approach that is inclusive. States must immediately insist on a pause to the development and deployment of the most harmful AI technologies.
