A thought arises, an emotion moves, something happens in your life, and immediately the mind asks: "What does this mean about me?" This habitual self-referencing is the machinery of separation. The invitation is not to silence life, but to see through the mechanism that creates a centre around which everything revolves.
There comes a profound shift when awareness no longer seeks a landing place in experience. The need to hold on to bliss, resist discomfort, preserve stillness, or become someone spiritually accomplished begins to dissolve. What remains is not a special state, but an unbounded openness that has always been here. This is the freedom that cannot be given and cannot be taken away, because it does not belong to the person.
There is a naked aliveness at the heart of existence that cannot be grasped by thought or possessed by the self. It is as intimate as the beating of your heart and as boundless as the open sky. You do not need to manufacture it through spiritual effort. It is revealed as the incessant movement towards something other than this begins to soften.
The paradox of awakening is that nothing about the human experience needs to disappear. There may still be sorrow, tenderness, uncertainty, fear, and joy. The body continues to feel, the mind continues to move, and life continues to unfold. But the fundamental identification with a separate self begins to dissolve. The wave no longer imagines itself to be isolated from the vastness of the ocean.
The mind imagines surrender as something it must accomplish. It tries to relinquish control while secretly maintaining its grip. But surrender cannot be manufactured by the very structure that seeks to remain in charge. It reveals itself in the softening of that grip, in the willingness to stop arguing with reality, and in the discovery that life does not require a separate self to hold it together.
The seeking mind is endlessly fascinated by the next possibility. Another insight, another teaching, another retreat, another experience that promises completion. Yet completion cannot be found in what comes next. The invitation is to allow the movement of seeking to become transparent, until there is no longer a self standing apart from life, demanding something from it. What remains is an extraordinary ordinariness.
The heart may have learned to defend itself through years of disappointment, rejection, abandonment, or loss. These defenses are not wrong. They are part of the human story. But there comes a moment when the invitation is no longer to strengthen the defenses, but to discover the openness that was never truly destroyed by what happened. This openness is not personal. It is the fragrance of your true nature.
True openness is not a spiritual ideal. It is the willingness to allow life to touch you without continually retreating behind the walls of self-protection. This does not mean abandoning discernment. It means no longer allowing fear to be the architect of your inner world.
