I'm SO excited to share my first article (Renaissance Quarterly 76:2)! It is a pandemic-era labour of love, rethinking what this work by van Dyck says about fashion, object materialities, and race. Also, it's open access! 🥳 doi.org/10.1017/rqx.2023.203
My latest OA article is out with @HistoricalJnl!
For this I used probably my favourite source to date: a book of sumptuary denouncements that lists guilty parties, numerous repeat offenders, and everything about infringing ensembles! cambridge.org/core/journals/…
Should you find yourself in need of a break from your usual afternoon activities, you might enjoy this video essay my amazing sister made about Juan Louis Guerra and Caribbean musical traditions -- it also features our adorable Dominican mum😊🇩🇴 youtube.com/watch?v=YjIUITvw…
Had a wonderful time perusing van Dyck's Italian Sketchbook at the BM. His attention to sartorial detail and the dimensions of the human body is breathtaking. His monkeys are pretty cute too🐒
Managed to catch Sargent and Fashion at @Tate before it closed! Loved seeing garments in dialogue with paintings, and important acknowledgements of the imperial and colonial dimensions of Sargent's portraiture.
Happening today!

Got to see this work in person around this time last year -- such a wonderful interpretation by @PeterBrathwaite.
1 of 5. David Bailly: Vanitas with African Servant (c.1650). A young Black man as exotic bric-à-brac. Reworked with a picture of an ancestor (Miles Brathwaite III), the will of enslaver John Brathwaite and minus the hefty neckchain. Rediscovering #BlackPortraiture. @GettyMuseum
Art historians! Can anyone recommend a text that discusses the paints/pigments used for male and female flesh colour in relation to artists' manuals during the early modern period? #twitterstorians
