Our investigation into #birdflu bailouts for giant meat and egg companies made the front page of the @nytimes! Congratulations to @FarmForward and @OurHonorVets. Reporting by @AndrewJacobsNYT

And there we have it, the first massive bird flu infection of the season: a few days ago, 934,600 hens at an Illinois egg farm were culled via heatstroke over several hours.

Regulators are protecting the financial interest of a small handful of companies—turkey, chicken, and cow factories and mink farms—while ignoring a potential pandemic. Another human case of bird flu was recently reported.

The MAHA/RFK crowd and the fact that the chicken industry doesn't want to lose their export market. If @chickencouncil is against it, you can bet @USDA isn't going to go against them. God forbid we protect public health or stop bailing out meat companies by developing a vaccine
NEW: Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has stalled progress toward a vaccine to stop the ongoing spread of bird flu. Sources told us the delay is partly due to fears of a backlash from RFK Jr. and the Make America Healthy Again movement. w/ @rachel_shin_ @politico

10,830. That’s how many factory farms Iowa has, more than any other state. Iowa has eight times as many CAFOs as it does grocery stores. But there’s no easy way for Iowans to find how just how much manure these farms produce, or where it’s coming from.

Is anyone doing attribution science on the climate impacts from the meat industry?
Just like Exxon knew about the impacts of climate change, the beef industry knew too. A new PLOS Climate study documents how the National Cattlemen’s Association (NCA), now NCBA, responded to evidence linking cattle methane to global warming from 1986–1996 (study 🔗 at 🧵end)

"NCBA has lobbied on climate-related issues and has at times minimized or denied the link between animal agriculture and climate change." Crucial new research showing how big ag, just like big oil, has historically downplayed its role in climate change. journals.plos.org/climate/ar…

.@WholeFoods finally responded to our report, telling the @nypost that every 365 chicken is "traceable to the farm, no antibiotics, and third-party verified." Great. This morning we sent WF four questions that would prove it. Here's what we asked and why we expect silence. 🧵

Q4: WF says "no antibiotics." Does that cover the breeders and hatcheries, or only the chicken on the shelf? And does WF test their products to verify? The salmonella we found was multi-drug resistant. "Third-party verified" should mean someone tested to ensure no abx.

Every question has an answer sitting in WF's files. We'll post whatever they send us. But a company charging up to 46% more for "better" chicken should be able to say, specifically, what makes it better. Right now the answer is a slogan. Full report farmforward.com/publications…

New report from @FarmForward reveals that @WholeFoods 365 chicken mostly comes from @PerdueFarms slaughterhouses that are highly contaminated with virulent antibiotic resistant salmonella. Nice of WF to charge a huge premium for the products.
Whole Foods' private-label '365' chicken comes from Perdue plants with salmonella issues: report trib.al/xWrT6dT

This is my politics
Iowa cancer rates are growing faster than anywhere else in the nation, and industrial agriculture pig farming appears to be the culprit. Research scientist Chris Jones has sounded the alarm about rising cancer rates, and now he's running to be the state's next Ag Secretary.

Eyes on this case—it has important implication for efforts to hold other polluting industries accountable for their harms
Today the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing arguments in a major climate case. A group of Colorado ranchers who are struggling with severe drought and heat say big oil companies should be held accountable for their role in causing climate change. latimes.com/environment/stor…

The biggest threat to family farmers, hands down, are giant animal factories.
As mega-dairies continue expanding across the country, policymakers face a choice about the future of the dairy industry: do we want a few, massive, national operators to control dairy production, or do we want to maintain dispersed, family-scale dairy farms?

A major food org humanewashing Diestel aside, this type of food "thought leadership" is just an aesthetic and marketing exercise that does more harm than good to actually thinking about food system solutions.
