What might explain the Finnish–Norwegian diplomatic fiasco now unfolding before our eyes?
I would not be surprised if the story turned out to be something like this:
Norway’s foreign policy establishment desperately needs a success right now. Why? Because ever since the Oslo Accords of 1993 and 1995, it has been firmly convinced that there is a distinctively Norwegian model.
The model rests on the belief that small countries without great power ambitions, such as Norway, should pursue dialogue. Have the difficult conversations with the parties to major conflicts, and thereby reach compromises that neither the great powers nor traditional power politics can deliver.
Norway’s foreign policy establishment has an unshakeable belief that this formula was the key to the success of the Oslo Accords.
For years, however, the Norwegian model has delivered few major, lasting breakthroughs. And the Oslo Accords themselves have lost their lustre.
That is demoralising in itself.
On top of that, Norway’s foreign policy establishment has been badly shaken by the fallout from the Epstein affair.
No one knows precisely what happened. And we should be careful not to accuse people of things they have not done. But Terje Rød-Larsen, his wife Mona Juul, Børge Brende and Thorbjørn Jagland were all closer to Epstein than prudence would have counselled.
This has led to hearings in the Storting, Norway’s parliament, that clarified nothing. And to a series of more serious inquiries - including criminal investigations into Juul, Rød-Larsen and Jagland.
What makes all this awkward is that Norway’s current prime minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, was foreign minister from 2005 to 2012. Even if he did nothing illegal - and he probably did not - several of the failings surrounding the funding of Rød-Larsen’s think tank, the International Peace Institute, occurred on his watch.
For all these reasons, I would not be surprised if it emerged that Norway was the real driving force behind this pointless phone call - Russia’s maximalist demands remain the same as ever.
If you are a major donor to Ukraine, it is hardly impossible to devise a roadmap that also includes a few requests going back and forth.
I could, of course, be wrong. But the idea of small countries using dialogue to resolve an apparently intractable conflict comes straight out of the Oslo model’s playbook.

She’s right. The Putin whisperers are clueless and merely signal Moscow that its strategy of dividing the West could bear fruit. No peace can come of this, only more war.
Mette Frederiksen Denmark's Prime Minister has declined the offers from Finland and Norway
don’t know what the two countries think you can achieve when Europe that when others have gone solo and, have travelled to Moscow, that it is important that we Europeans go together," she said.”
Mette Frederiksen (S) has told Finland's President, Alexander Stubb, and Norway's Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, that she disagrees with their “going it alone.
I don’t know what the two countries think you can achieve with this. We have previously also stressed in clear reports from the rest of Europe that when others have gone solo and, for example, have travelled to Moscow, that it is important that we Europeans go together," she said.”

Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine on Vivek Ramaswamy's attack ad featuring Amy Acton's estranged and abusive mother:
“The ad, on its face is, deeply, deeply troubling. But when you know the rest of the story, when you know the backstory, when you know that the husband of the mom was indicted by a grand jury after hearing testimony, and then he took off along with the mother. When you know that, it just... makes it more serious. It makes it just more wrong. So it's wrong to run this... I would just urge the Ramaswamy campaign to take this down."

Putin personally ordered a new wave of attacks on @NATO countries in Europe. The Leipzig airport plot was one of the opening shots.
Putin was driven by frustration with the stalled negotiations and Ukraine’s deep strikes.

Since Sept. 5, possibly before, Witkoff and Kusher have been negotiating a $20 bn Russia-Qatar-USA "deal" to change the ownership structure of Putin's energi giant LUKOIL. Witkoff's and Trump's positive view of Putin may in part be inspired by the prospects of this.
Holy shit, Witkoff just called Putin a "humanitarian."
"You talk so much about my president, President Trump, being a humanitarian. You are a humanitarian also, sir, and I salute that, I commend you, and I thank you again."
Because of Putin, thousands of Ukrainian civilians are dead, hospitals lie in ruins, and people are suffering from hunger, torture and Russian terrorism.
