Amnesty: Responding to a report of threats made in person against a freelance journalist reporting on a street protest outside a police station in Derry / Londonderry on Tuesday (13 October) evening, Patrick Corrigan, Head of Nations and Regions at Amnesty International UK, said:   “Threatening a journalist who is simply doing their job is an appalling attempt to silence independent reporting and must be condemned unequivocally. No journalist should face intimidation or threats of violence for covering a public protest. Such behaviour undermines press freedom and denies the public their right to access information in the public interest.   “Regrettably, this incident reflects a wider and deeply troubling pattern of threats and harassment directed at journalists in Northern Ireland. Amnesty International’s investigation last year documented more than 70 incidents since 2019, many of them linked to paramilitary groups.   “Our findings exposed an environment in which journalists can be left fearing for their safety, while those responsible for intimidation too often escape accountability.   “Journalists must be free to report on protests and matters of public concern without fear of threats or reprisals. The PSNI must take this incident - which occurred outside a police station - extremely seriously and ensure that those responsible are identified and held accountable.   “Intimidating journalists for carrying out their work has no place in a democratic society. Freedom of the press must be protected, and attempts to undermine it must never be tolerated.”

It's worth pointing out that preventing journalists from filming because footage 'might be used against someone' doesn’t make much sense when you're outside a police station covered in CCTV, with officers wearing activated bodycams standing there, an evidence-gathering drone overhead, and police running people's car registrations as they enter the area and monitoring them as they disperse from the area afterwards. Is the concept of police evidence and intelligence gathering lost on people? Journalists are not evidence gatherers, and we do not work for the PSNI. Make it make sense.

"If you want to get out of here safe and sound, no filming." Those were the words I was met with while filming a protest in Derry’s Waterside this evening. I was told not to film because they said the protest was peaceful. When I asked whether they wanted to get their message out there, the response was "shut your mouth". I then approached one person who had been shouting at me and asked if I had done something wrong. I was told no, but then immediately told to "f**k off". There was also a warning that if they were "over in my end of the woods", it would be a different story - not sure what this means. I was told they did not want me there and that I had no right to stand in the street. I do not know who these people were, but they were standing, watching over the protest. Their message, however, was clear: journalists are not welcome. I will not be intimidated, threatened or deterred from carrying out my work. I stand firmly by the principle that the press must be free to report without fear, favour or intimidation. I will continue to do my job. I will not be silenced, and I will not be intimidated out of doing the work the public has a right to see. @NUJofficial

A protest organised by Waterside PUL Heritage took place in Derry’s Waterside this evening over what organisers describe as two-tier policing and political interference in the justice system. Protesters marched from Irish Street Park to Waterside police station before moving towards Crescent Link Dual Carriageway. The group claimed the PSNI was backing Sinn Féin and the IRA, and said community concerns were not being heard.

“Palestine still needs our help,” says Brendan Mac Cionnaith of the Garvaghy Road Residents’ Coalition, as he addressed today’s rally in Derry. Brendan dedicated his speech to two young people in Gaza, aged 14 and 18, who wrote to him describing the horrific injuries inflicted on their parents. Their letter also expressed solidarity with the Garvaghy Road community. He stressed the importance of never losing focus on Palestine, its children and their parents, adding: “If we lose hope, they will too.” Brendan called for people to continue coming out in solidarity with Palestine.

⛔️WATCH GARVAGHY: This is the moment Breandán Mac Cionnaith told residents the parade had been banned Secretary of State Sir @RhonddaBryant says police warned that facilitating the parade risked serious injury and disorder spreading across Northern Ireland. The decision follows unsuccessful negotiations between the Orange Order and Garvaghy Road residents. While acknowledging that the parade had lawful approval, Sir Chris says circumstances have changed considerably. He is now calling for all protests, rallies and demonstrations to be stood down, warning that those who acted unlawfully should face the consequences. More on-air from Chief Reporter @jamesgould23.

“The issue of parading in the Garvaghy Road was put to bed, and that's where it should stay, in the history bins of 28 years ago,” says Sinn Féin MLA Deirdre Hargey, speaking at a protest outside Erskine House in Belfast. She also called on the British government to “put an end to this saga once and for all”.
