And there's some sense to that of course, it doesn't help anyone to question aunt Marie at the family dinner party why she wears such an ugly blouse. Hope you like it.🤞🏼❤️) A Red Coat A little red jacket was the first thing I saw on the platform. Not one of those thick, puffy down ones everyone used to wear, no—a fine, clean-lined cotton coat with big, handsome buttons. It’s lying on the ground. Thrown aside or dropped next to a bench… no, no, no, that won’t do at all! Somewhere a little girl is surely missing her coat. It’s chilly out and already fall. If Louise had run off without a jacket in the biting October wind, her mother would have had more than a few words for her, that’s for sure. One long stride carries me off the escalator that brought me down to the platform. Two steps and a kneel later, and the jacket is in my hand. I give it a shake, a critical once-over—not too dirty, thank goodness. My eyes take in the crowd. Cambridge station on a Friday afternoon. At least I’m not alone! Good thing Sarah isn’t here—she’s never liked crowds. Eyes glued to screens, people looking stressed, folks pushing onto trains. To the right a couple is kissing goodbye, it seems. One of them turns a little. Two women eh. The world keeps changing. How wonderful for them, I think, smiling. To the left a train pulls away, people standing inside. I smile faintly. Heh, lucky I wasn’t headed on that one. The bench in front is empty. I sit down at one end—can’t hog the whole thing myself. The flowers in my hand shift to my lap, and the coat settles on the splintered wooden planks they call a bench beside me. Graffiti everywhere. At the end, a phone number offering intimate shaving of all things. Closest to me: a skull where the classic crossed bones have been replaced by what are clearly meant to be male parts. Sigh. 'Kids these days' drifts through my mind—horrible vandalism, and smaller children walk past here all the time! The bench boards are starting to splinter, and a couple look completely cracked at the edges. I wrinkle my nose in disapproval. If I were still a clerk at city hall I would have called Gary in Maintenance and… calm down, calm down. Sarah would have given me that twinkling smile and called me “old grandpa” if she’d heard my private grumbling. Heh, she would have found the skull a little funny—kind of creative, even. A scent of flowers reaches me and I look down. The tulips in my lap are still perfect; they mustn’t get bent, no, no, no. They have to stay beautiful. They’ll look just right in that nice green-and-white vase my brother and his wife gave Sarah when we got married. Seven years. Seven years since we said our vows and she’s still the love of my life. She’s going to be so happy with these tulips, my wife. Heh, that rhymed. Should I put together a little poem for her? She always likes when I do that—or maybe a romantic limerick? The wind gusts and jolts me out of my thoughts. I tighten my hold on the bouquet so it’s safe in my arms. Red fabric lifts in the breeze, but my hand is there—I’ve got you! Saved from the ground once more, I keep my hand over the coat at my side. People move quickly. Happy voices mix with the conductors’ calls. Suitcases roll across the asphalt. Where is the girl whose coat I’m watching? I look around. She must be getting cold soon. My thoughts drift again—they do that more and more these days. I smile a little. A sure sign of love! All I have to do is close my eyes and I see the proudest moment of my life: Sarah walking slowly toward me in the church. Sarah von Surath, now Anderson, became mine that day. She liked the ceremony they do in the States—the one where the bride walks on her father’s arm toward the groom. The groom shakes like a leaf or cries from pure joy. Heh, I think I did both.
