📢 From #CatcallingtoFemicide: A New Year’s Call for Gender Justice in Ethiopia Despite constitutional guarantees of equality, violence against women in Ethiopia is rising at alarming levels, fueled by harmful practices, distorted religious justifications, and weak accountability. Since November 2024, Addis Powerhouse, Article 35, and the SIHA Network have been working through the campaign From Catcalling to Femicide to demand safety, justice, and dignity for women. Consultations with religious leaders, civil society, and state actors have reaffirmed that no faith legitimizes violence and that urgent legal reforms, accountability, and collective action are essential. 🌟 Our International Women’s Day celebration in Ethiopia reminded us that every woman's voice matters, every story deserves to be heard, and every struggle is worth fighting for! The event, "From Movement to Momentum: Recognizing Wins, Demanding Action," included a panel discussion moderated by Zemdena Abebe - SIHA Network Ethiopia Country Coordinator] with contributions from Hon. Nechte Felate, Kiya Ali [@Article35_ET], Tequam Amare, Bezawit Taye [@YellowMvt], and Hania Mohammed from Beza for Women Development Association. We honoured and paid tribute to women’s rights champions, pioneers, and change-makers across rural communities, digital spaces, and universities who are advocating for women and girls’ rights. Pictorial impressions from a Day of #Artivism and Dialogue, jointly organized by SIHA Network, Article 35, and Addis Powerhouse, to mark the #16DaysOfActivism in Ethiopia 🎨 Through art, we shared the powerful stories of #GBV victims and survivors who continue to demand justice. We were joined by experts from the Ministry of Justice, the Association for Women's Sanctuary and Development (AWSAD), the Ethiopian Women Human Rights Defenders Network, and the Good Samaritan Association, along with an engaged audience of international organisations, grassroots women’s rights groups, and media representatives. Together, we gathered over the traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony for an important conversation focused on practical steps—both legal and social—to address violence against women and girls.
