A scrum to be preserved years later in avatar fame on social media... xitter.cf/NBAHistory/status/8335…
Even 24 years after retiring from the @NBA Wilt Chamberlain commanded a huge media presence at #NBAAllStar (1997, @NBA at 50, Cleveland)
Good to see this World Series last long enough for the Rays to wear a uniform worthy of it.
That blue-green, cartoon stingray get-up looks fit for a fictional baseball team in a movie or TV show.
In the pressbox, few of us doubted Morris would come back for 10th. Twins were in ride-or-die mode. Plus: Morris.
Best WS ever (partisanship aside). So many late, close games you could hear the scribes cursing, one after another, as their deadlines passed without final scores.
OTD in 1991, Jack Morris turned in arguably the best big-game performance ever 😤
Morris threw 10 scoreless innings in Game 7 of the World Series as the Twins beat the Braves 1-0 in one of the most dramatic Postseason games of all time.
Scattering 7 hits and striking out 8, Morris became just the 3rd pitcher to throw a shutout of more than 9 innings in the World Series, joining Christy Mathewson (1913) and Clem Labine (1956)
The @Twins won the game in the bottom of the 10th on Gene Larkin’s pinch-hit single to give Minnesota its second World Series championship in five years.

On this date in 1991, Kirby Puckett made Game 6 of the #WorldSeries his own – and etched his name into @Twins history. ow.ly/RGS75100Zkb

This is how Yandy Diaz’s swing that ended WS Game 2 would’ve looked under the Automatic Check Swing challenge system they’ve been testing in the Minor Leagues.
It wouldn’t have been ruled a swing 👀

Wow! What a classic photo of the two greatest athletes in NBA history. And how about that one handed fadeaway? You’ve never seen anybody else do that. But there’s a good reason. He’s Once In A Lifetime. MF Wilt!
Pulled from an old bin in the garage this morning. This shoots to the top of my re-reading list. (Had the paperback version in my teens, then later upgraded to used hardcover.) @PeterVecsey1

Yes, bad. Imagine if he did that during an Olympic medals ceremony.

This is such complete bullshit

Two staffers for the WNBA PR department sat during the anthem, one with his arms crossed the entire time.
After the anthem ended, I asked them why they didn’t stand. Neither would say.

For everyone asking, “how is this legal?” It’s not! He gathers with his right foot on the floor and would be permitted two steps by rule (left-right). He takes four steps after gathering the ball and travels.

In their season openers:
Bulls lost by 43
Suns lost by 41
Heat lost by 25
Kings lost by 25
Warriors lost by 22
Jazz lost by 20
This is the first time in NBA history 6 different teams lost their openers by 20+ points in the same season.

Prime quotes from Wilt Chamberlain on his 50th birthday in Toronto:
• On bringing an NBA franchise to Toronto:
"I've been coming here for 30 years... I've come to love Toronto. Maybe it is because I was raised in a city and I have watched Toronto grow. It's a great cosmopolitan city."
• On challenging NBA owners:
"While I wouldn't play anymore, I think I could still take on every owner in the NBA on the court — one on one."
• On his custom $400,000 sports cars:
"They're called Chamberlains... They are exotic cars, something like the Lamborghinis. I have 20 of them..."
• On pro wrestling:
"You know, for a while I was thinking of becoming a pro wrestler."

Jim Pollard on Wilt Chamberlain blocking 9 consecutive shots by rookie Walt Bellamy:
"My man is 6-11, but every time he went for the shot, boom, there was that big hand."
"Chamberlain is great, but he ought to be better. He paces himself something terrible. One of these nights he's gonna get mad and score 100 points… and stuff three players and two referees through the hoop while he's at it."
When rookie Walt Bellamy was tasked with guarding Wilt Chamberlain in 1961-62:
"There are a lot of ways to court disaster, like fooling around with a loaded gun, or assigning a rookie to play against Wilt Chamberlain."
"Chamberlain not only poured in 51 points but blocked the first nine shots taken by Bellamy inside the free throw line. Bellamy, a former All-America at Indiana who had been averaging 29 points a game in the NBA, was held to 14."
Fact is, you can root for whomever and whatever you want and not worry about being “disloyal” or “not real.”
It’s sports. Duh.
Reminds me of a Gophers fan at home game who stood up, turned around, glared and yelled “Coach wants us to stand and make noise!”
Sit down. Shaddup.
A lot of Vikings fans are upset that the Giants lost today, and that tells me everything I need to know. You’d rather see a conference rival with only one loss win another game and move closer to the Vikings in the standings? How does that make any sense? At some point, you have to put your personal feelings about certain players aside and look at what’s actually best for Minnesota. 💜💛
Burnsie was a beauty. So hard in the room that day not to smile or laugh, cuz we knew in real time it was an all-timer.
(BTW, stay for the end.)
Would not surprise me if Yount himself roared around the warning track, now as then. Indelible.
For those of us old enough to remember watching Robin bust out on the motorcycle during the County Stadium celebration, I hope @Brewers recreate something similar next week. Until then, let’s enjoy some AI.
