As expected, the @UKLabour Government is relying on creative accounting, ‘clever’ spin and ‘jam tomorrow’ to sell its so-called Defence Investment Plan (a tiny, and reduced sub-set of the budget) to a mainly disinterested, welfare-dependent, debt-loaded, post-industrial country.
This should not come as a surprise to anyone.
Paraphrasing @wesstreeting: “Those charged with the defence of the UK (regardless of threats faced) will have to live within their (treasury set) means…it’s the best we can do, and it’s all that the focus-groups want us to do…”
It’s the “see no evil” approach to defence planning
John Healey will cut £2bn from the defence budget despite boasting about filling a funding black hole.

Bloomberg: "A new anxiety is gripping Wall Street as it bankrolls the vast network of data centers and chips behind the artificial intelligence boom: Early signs suggest that the credit market is approaching the limits of how much more debt it can absorb.
One after another, yields are soaring into the double digits on bonds and loans funding the AI infrastructure buildout. Bankers are finding it more difficult to offload risk to insurers and other investors."

The coming crunch;
The OBR says that it expects *no growth* in real earnings in 2027 and 2028 because of the impact of stealth taxes and higher prices
Real household disposable income is also expected to fall in the near term

Tommy Robinson has been found guilty - it is my view that the system has, again, treated him unfairly.

The "do no harm budget." UK has gov spending near 45% of GDP, debt near 100%. Tax revenue at levels never sustained in the UK before. Crazy fiscal drag. Concerning high income emigration. That's harm enough. Fiddling with cash ISAs and marmalade prices doesn't cut it.

Hidden away on page 111 of the Budget - 'The government is providing £150 million capital investment in 2027-28 to fund additional large sites to accommodate asylum seekers'
A treasonous decision.
Every penny of that should be directed towards a programme of mass deportations.

There will be an election next May.
Budget Day will be bad, what comes next will be worse. Burnham will call an election, Tories will win back seats lost to Lib Dems who will disappear again, Reform will set a record for most second places and win fewer than 20 seats, SNP will be rampant in Scotland, Burnham will have a majority of c. 90.

Spot on totally …
The reason for the return of diplomacy between Europe and Russia is the change in the geopolitical and geoeconomic environment. With oil at over $100, and France on the brink of a debt crisis, Europe is politically and financially not able to maintain its support for Ukraine at the level needed for Ukraine to resist Russia's advance, let alone push back. At no point during the last five years did western European leaders have a strategy to secure Ukraine's victory. Nor did they have a strategy for peace. It is too early to say what yesterday's call between Støre, Stubb and Putin will accomplish, but we are now entering a different phase.
