A “dear anonymous profile” drinks mostly Irish whiskey. I buy it, try it and maybe tell you what I think. Was in Asia, now just visiting. Occasional aeroplanes.

Redbreast 12 currently reduced to GBP44.63 at Heathrow, which makes it worthy of consideration. Just. The 18 you can leave where it is. The last of the Power’s Red Labels are still there too. Just about. GBP16.59 for a litre. Phenomenal value. But gone soon. And yes, I know.

A tale of two Single Pot Stills. Both taken out of the collection last Christmas because I decided they weren’t that collectible. The Drumshanbo I’d had before and went back to hoping I was wrong, but no. These original bottles remain young, raw and not very good at all…

The Jameson surprised me though. It was *much* better than expected and working through a whole bottle turned out to be a real delight. This was one of the very first to be released (22/01). I hope they haven’t messed with it since. Hope I was wrong about the collectability too.

Reconsidered. Went back. There was one left. Another chap standing there, thinking about it… that’s the mistake I made last time. Yoink. Too late.
Keep seeing people piling up their Lidl Oktoberfest beer boxes and I talked myself out of buying one this morning because Oktoberfest is over. I may have made a terrible mistake.

So, after a couple of duds the Lidl bierbox really started to shine and tonight is the best yet, Hohenthanner Märzen. Are all Festbiers Märzens? I don’t know enough to know, but Märzen is the traditional Oktoberfest beer style and this is brilliant. Shame there’s only one.

Keeper’s Heart rye, grain, SPS. For no reason other than ignorant prejudice I had low or no expectations for this. Turns out it’s mighty stuff. A clever merger of distinct, powerful flavours in one unassuming bottle. It has layer upon layer of loveliness. Brian knew. Of course.
Brought this back from the US. Keeper’s Heart blend of Irish grain, pot still and American Rye (43%). I mean, it’s got to be OK right? ‘Fugit Hora’ (feck the hoors).

It’s just a shame we can’t buy American whiskey anymore. Fugit Hora (feck the hoors).

Ó’Catháin 8-year single malt (40%) bought on a whim at auction with zero info and zero expectations. Turned out to be lovely. Expected a throwaway whiskey but no, some real care and attention went into this. Assume it is Bushmills and wish I had more. A nice, surprising find.
Rescued from the auctions because nobody wanted them, am looking forward to trying. The West Corks should be easy, never had a bad drop from them. The cute bottles make me nostalgic for Inish Turk Beg. The Ó’Catháin I know nothing about, but it was for free (almost). Grand so.

An excellent start and with appropriate glassware too. Weltenburg Abbey brewing since 1050, it says here in Wikipedia.

At the halfway point and the second standout beer (after the Weltenburg) is the Wieninger. There’s definitely something to be said for a simple label and a tall bottle…

Well, Hibiki Blossom Harmony 2024 is an extraordinary whiskey; how can something start so well but finish so badly? Nose, just gorgeous, then it crunches to a dull stodgy end that amazes, disappointingly. Literally a hot mess. A real game of two halves, not in a good way. Am sad.
Got this as a present from a friend who is a good friend and gives good presents 🥃🥃

Teeling Single Pot Still, Virgin Swedish Oak (50%). When I finally opened this gorgeous box, was what was inside as beautiful? A powerful combination of young SPS and heavy, heavy wood. Teeling always do higher ABV and should be congratulated for that but…

this one definitely needed more time, more work and taming. So typically Teeling. Comes on strong, then meh. It was unbalanced and unfinished. Slightly too young whiskey meets slightly too much wood. Am reminded of this now ’cos it’s currently at auction for £25 - far from RRP

Such a crime for all this to end up in the bin.
