Hot take—Continuing to say that we as accounting professionals are the problem and that we just need to plan harder and push back is like saying stay out of the way of your abuser. The bottom line is we work with a broken tax system, with antiquated 1950s deadlines and even with technology Henry Bloch couldn’t imagine we still can prepare more returns more quickly than they could with three layers of forms and carbon paper. The code is too complex, the public is not savvy, social media is more trusted than tax pros with credentials no matter what they are. Associations need to be activists for us not just continuing ed providers and social hour planners. Everyone can see this industry has problems but AICPA, NAEA, NSAcct, and NATP are all focused on selling insurance, classes and raising dues. If you want to innovate, figure out how to battle Congress and Intuit, that’s what the profession needs.

Live & learn, we've made adjustments to not have this situation repeat. But this was still a tough one.
What are the top 1-2 personality traits you hire for, why, and how do you identify it in pre-screenings & interviews?
Our most prized trait in our team is curiosity as it covers various components of critical thinking.
Still thinking through how best to suss this out pre-hire.

The smartest thieves take things you never knew you had.
A few ways people may be stealing from your business without ever touching your bank account:
There is a special place in hell for US tax firms who hire offshore labor for full-time roles, but pay by the hour and reduce pay during the off season resulting in less than a living wage.

Forget 400k and above 1040 audits. The non-compliance can all be traced back to entity returns. The number of 500k-2M S corps with reasonable comp and basis issues is enough to keep the service busy for the next decade.

Just no more back of the napkin anything. We want to do the work right or we don't want to do it.

She's wrong at every turn. Not a misunderstanding or a mistake, but just wrong. The extent to which this is wrong cannot be understated.
Prospective client: We haven't filed tax returns since 2021, we still owe for 2021 but never requested an installment agreement, we can't get a passport for an upcoming trip.
Also prospective client: Our current tax pro never brings us ideas.

New favorite S Corp thing:
Business operates as two-person partnership with LLC for like 10 years, elects S, two years later they want to distribute a passive asset to the owners without incurring tax.
