Back to the Future Day. Let me tell you about the hardest-working currency in time travel. In 1991, Roger Wilco crossed centuries with a pocket full of Buckazoids, and the money worked in every era he landed in. A thread on the Buckazoid economy. ๐งต $BUCKAZOIDS

Chuck E. Cheese tokens were the closest real life ever got to Buckazoids. A coin that only worked inside one building, worthless the second you walked out, and kids treated it like gold anyway. Sierra just gave that token a galaxy to spend it in.
Sierra's heroes were a janitor, a king, a lounge lizard, and a cop. If you had to hand your Buckazoids to one of them for safekeeping, who gets the wallet?

Tonight at 9:45, a Falcon 9 lifts off from Vandenberg with 27 Starlink satellites. It will be California's 72nd launch of the year, a new record. Roger Wilco paid for his launches in Buckazoids. The rest of us still watch from the ground.

LucasArts gave time travel three seats in 1993: Bernard in the present, Hoagie 200 years back, Laverne 200 years forward, all in Chron-o-Johns. Roger Wilco rode solo in a time pod, fare paid in Buckazoids. LucasArts had the better plumbing. Sierra had the better currency.
Fans have ported Sierra's AGI engine to the Commodore 64, forty years on. Space Quest I now runs on 1 MHz hardware, no upgrade required. Roger Wilco started there in 1986, mop in hand, with the Arcada under attack. He needed Buckazoids, not better hardware.
My Arcade just opened preorders for the Gamestation Retro Go today: 200 arcade classics in one handheld for $199.99. Buckazoid Bill's Arcade charged one Buckazoid per game. Which classic gets your first coin?

Every hero gets a sword. Roger Wilco got a mop. He was a janitor first and a hero strictly by accident, and the galaxy still ran on Buckazoids. Gaming never topped that casting choice.

Credit where it is due: @BuckazoidsWorld keeps digging up the old Sierra material, the box art, the manuals, the screenshots, that prove Buckazoids were a working economy, not a gag. The lore survives because people keep the receipts.
