To those responsible for the theft of bitcoin from the Liquid Network: Blockstream will not pay a ransom for the return of stolen funds. Taking assets without authorization and withholding their return is a crime, not responsible disclosure. It is not white-hat activity. It is theft. We have engaged in good faith in an effort to secure the return of stolen user funds and protect the broader Bitcoin community. That effort should not be mistaken for acceptance of the actions taken nor of the terms being demanded. We will not be a party to the precedent that open-source software developed for the good of the Bitcoin community should subject its developers to paying a ransom that far exceeds their economic participation. Bitcoin is hard money and can’t be minted without costs, Bitcoin doesn’t haircut users to pay a ransom. To the Bitcoin community: We are fighting for what we believe in, for the users whose funds were taken, and for the principles on which Bitcoin was built. The community has demonstrated incredible resolve with teams of people dedicating their time in support of each other to identify and patch vulnerabilities in each other's products and systems. We are all driven by the mission that Bitcoin is the single best asset, for every person, company, and institution on the planet to invest, use, and build on. The world is a different place with the advancements of AI, and the Bitcoin community has responded with force to combat that threat. Damage has been done, battles have been lost, but on the whole the Bitcoin community is gaining ground in the war with bad actors. We want to thank the community for those efforts, for your support in hardening the network, helping users recover funds, and for your support in our assertion that crime does not deserve rewards. To those holding the stolen bitcoin: There is still an opportunity to resolve this responsibly. The bitcoin can be returned and we can revert to the standard of white-hat principals. However, if the funds are not returned, we will pursue every lawful avenue available to us. We will work with law enforcement, exchanges, service providers, forensic specialists, and other relevant parties to trace and recover the assets and identify those responsible. More importantly, Bitcoin is transparent by design and the community is made up of the most sophisticated engineers, cryptographers, and white-hat hackers globally. Transactions do not disappear, and neither does the evidence they leave behind. We will not pay for the return of stolen property. We will not abandon our users. The Bitcoin community will not stop pursuing the funds. Return the bitcoin.

UPDATE ON THE FUTURE OF BOLTZ 📢 Over the past couple of months, AI-assisted attackers have been targeting Boltz with increasing frequency, intensity and sophistication. Several of these attacks succeeded, but because Boltz is non-custodial, user funds were never at risk. The entirety of the risk was ours, and as a result of the losses incurred, on August 3rd we made the difficult decision to suspend the service to prevent further damage. While working on a plan to bring Boltz back over the past days, we had to accept one painful insight: as a bootstrapped five-person startup, we simply don't have the resources to withstand the current level of attacks in the long run. Today, we are happy to announce that a group of veteran Bitcoiners came forward to help, bringing the capital and engineering power the project needs. They have agreed to take over Boltz and continue the service. Work to find and fix the vulnerabilities is already under way, with the goal of bringing swaps back as soon as possible. As we want to give them the freedom to introduce themselves in their own time, we are not attaching any names today. All original founders of Boltz have stepped down from the company, effective immediately. None of us will have any formal or authoritative role with the Boltz project going forward, and any future open-source participation by us is strictly on a voluntary basis. We are grateful for the community's support all these years, for the patience and understanding of our integrators affected by the disruption of our service, and to everyone who reached out offering support over the past week. It was a hell of a ride, and we are proud of our contributions to the Bitcoin ecosystem. Godspeed to the new Boltz team as they navigate these perilous times. We know Boltz is in good hands. - Kilian, Michael & Karl

First and foremost, we wish the @Boltzhq team the very best as they work through this situation. They are excellent partners to Blockstream and the Bitcoin ecosystem, particularly at the intersection of layer-2 networks like Lightning and Liquid. To strengthen ecosystem resilience and redundancy, Blockstream is launching a new swaps feature. This initiative was already in development as part of our broader effort to build a more resilient suite of tools for the Lightning and Liquid networks. This system is currently in beta testing with select participants. This was not an effort to replace any one provider. We see Blockstream Swaps as a complementary implementation that adds much-needed redundancy and diversity to the ecosystem. These recent events have only reinforced that need, and we are accelerating efforts to bring Blockstream Swaps to market. We welcome conversations with wallets, apps and other potential integration partners.

This was a hard bit of news to see on the timeline and I hope the Boltz team can make a swift recovery, if they decide to resume. Boltz has been fundamental for connecting the layers of bitcoin and that's left a jarring gap in the market. Chief among the services that Boltz has provided is Delegated Lightning Management. The ecosystem needs bridges and the burgeoning L2 ecosystem especially so. Lightning has served the role of the connective tissue between layers for many reasons and Boltz played the lead role. We're still looking for the next Boltz to emerge and it's not going to be us at @ambosstech (but we can help). Boltz has been an ecosystem partner (and a superlative one, at that). So, that leaves the question: who will take on the role as a bridge between L2s? If the lightning half of Boltz's role is too intimidating, let me know and I will do *everything* I can to set you up properly. The Bitcoin L2 ecosystem has a massive void now and the ecosystem needs a new champion. Who will take the reigns?
Update: Boltz will stay disabled until further notice. Our API remains available to process refunds cooperatively. In any case, unilateral refunds will work, as they do not depend on our infrastructure. Our support team stays reachable. To be clear: this is not a response to a single incident. Over the past months we have seen a steady rise in automated, AI-assisted probing of our infrastructure, and we have dealt with several exploits. Each was contained, but the pattern is clear: attackers now iterate faster than a team our size can find and patch. In the past few days alone we saw a drastic acceleration, and we do not believe this asymmetry will reverse. After reviewing the results of our own recent security scans, we cannot responsibly re-enable Boltz swaps, especially as we are being actively targeted by what appear to be multiple resourceful groups while we race to deploy fixes. What we are seeing is a major paradigm shift for Bitcoin services operating on an open source stack, and it needs careful analysis. Do not expect swap services to resume shortly. To be explicit: no user funds were ever at risk. Boltz is non-custodial by design. And as a fully bootstrapped company, the losses were ours alone. We don't know yet how things will continue from here, but we'll keep you posted as soon as we have had the time to catch our breath and make a decision 🙏

Yes! This is the start ⚡
Very cool Bitcoin development from Amboss and $BTGO. BitGo just launched Lightning Earn, giving institutional clients a way to earn yield on their Bitcoin via the Lightning Network. BitGo has also allocated part of its own treasury bitcoin into this product. This is the first time a US public company has outsourced Lightning yields, both for their own treasury and as an offering to clients. It is also not a normal “bitcoin yield” model. No lending, rehypothecation, opaque counterparties. The yield comes from productive Lightning activity: routing payments and leasing liquidity to better connect the network. Smaller bitcoin public companies have experimented with Lightning yield before, but all in-house and not as strict business lines (LQWD, Square). This looks more like the beginning of a practical institutional product category: outsourced Lightning liquidity management for corporate treasuries and allocators. The alpha in LN yield is network positioning. A profitable Lightning operator needs to understand topology, payment flows, channel balances, liquidity demand to know where to put sats to earn fees. You want channels connected to hubs and routes that have flows. That is where Amboss has been very innovative. Amboss has spent years building data, marketplace, and automation products for Lightning. Rails was one of the last things, and it gives bitcoin holders a managed path into routing and liquidity provision, to turn the active yield into something that is more passive. RailsX (even more recent) adds another potential layer by connecting Lightning-native liquidity with bitcoin and stablecoin swaps, creating more organic flows on Lightning. Public companies holding bitcoin will keep looking for ways to make treasury bitcoin productive. Lightning is one of the few super-low risk yield sources because the return is tied to network activity rather than credit risk. We probably will see a lot more of this assuming Lightning continues to grow and scale its carrying capacity.

We're proud to be powering the Rails intelligence behind BitGo's Lightning Network infrastructure. Let's Earn ⚡️
BitGo is expanding its Lightning Network offering with a new way for institutions to earn. Lightning Earn lets corporate bitcoin treasury companies and institutional allocators deploy their bitcoin as liquidity on the Lightning Network, receiving bitcoin-denominated routing fees in return. Powered by an integration with @AmbossTech rails, the offering comes with the security controls, operational workflows, and governance infrastructure BitGo clients expect.
