This is the most important moral problem I've ever encountered.
Through my life I learned ethics via regret, like trial-and-error: you spontaneously feel bad about hurting someone (or doing something wrong) & never do the specific thing again.
But a more advanced moral rule: to generalize from your mistakes you do not have to pay back the specific person so long as you do good elsewhere.
